  • Laser printing in-house (colour) Vs purchasing outside?

Posted by Lorraine Clinch on 14 February 2013 at 15:19

As the title, what are your thoughts on the cost of laser printing?
My OKI is sitting here unused for various reasons, and I would like to put it to work.
I have an order for 500 letter heads, and don’t know whether I should farm the order out to an internet printer or print them myself.
Is the quality good enough to sell on to a customer, and how do you price it?

    Sorry, so many questions!!

I have an oki c5600 (TMT) but rarely use it for garments any more, I chuck in the cheaper 3rd party ‘rainbow’ packs which cost around £90 for all four carts, prints lovely – not so hot for garments though!

if I could find a good quality and reasonably priced guilotine I’d do loads more on it!

My Oki is the same model as yours Hugh. I’m just going to do it, and see how it goes…can’t really see why I am worrying about it, to be honest.

I’ve also got a TMT supplied OKI, the C821 (A3) and I regularly take on Laser Print jobs with it, quite a few for a local Graphic Designer/Artist and he’s very happy with the Quality…

if I was putting genuine oki carts @£65+vat through it I would probably worry, but at ££25 a cart.. no probs!

The printer is out of warranty, despite only ever having the original carts in prom purchase, so have bought cheapies, seem OK so far.

    Cheers guys.

500 sheets all printed on 120gsm paper with non-OEM carts, I’m pretty pleased to have done them myself!
Now to decide what to charge…

    A WORD OF WARNING!

Some laser printers, don’t like having laser printed letterheads run through them! You can sometimes find the image off the letterhead transfers to the drum in the printer and makes a mess of their printer.

There’s no solid rules as to which printers etc, but beware it can happen. We always ask the customs if its printed on a ink jet or laser and advise them of the possibility.

We have a Xerox with finishing unit & guillotine, ideal for leaflets etc.

    500 letterheads £50-60? At a guess.
