Neon, How much do people know or understand ?
Hi Guys,
I have read a few of the forum posts and some really strange things are said about neon, the use of it, how dangerous they think it is and it efficency . Just wondered if people tend to use leds through just a shear lack of understanding of neon, or being scared to use it, or another reason maybe ?

The electrical side is dead easy (no pun intended) if you’ve a bit of common sense / electrical background.
Just follow the legislation & you’re fine.
Why I think neon is shied away from:
Cost of breakages, before during & after installation.
Zero margin for error….if it doesn’t fit, you’re stuffed.
High cost of sections & suitable CE rated transformers.
High voltages – typically between 3kv & 10kv…creates fear in the uninitiated.And the hassle factor.
…but you just can’t beat it for colour, light output, appearance…
I used to do a fair bit of it – now I don’t want to spend the time on it. Poor ‘risk/reward’ factor. Still get called on to do trouble shooting / replacements in the local area…only do it if I’m quiet.

Daves post is bang on easy to install easy to repair good money but inflexible and not suited to modern signage (except in a few cases)
do repairs almost monthly as most sign cos wont touch it , its easy and safe
