Sent the heads over to the maint area for a manual wipe and one of the ribbon cables shorted out on the chassis… (knocks against it every pass – from the look of it not the first time (few small scorches).

It’s killed one of the heads…or the controller.

Test print all perfect except Magenta 2 is firing all pins…the other side of the head (CYAN 2) is A-OK.

Changed the cables round…still Magenta 2 going all out.

    Anyone experienced this fault before?

I know it’s time to call in a tech to do ‘something’, but would like to know if it’s a simple ‘replace the fuse’ sort of deal or if it’s a suck in a deep breath and empty my pockets.

Looks like time for a replacement printhead I’m afraid.

I saw a very similar thing on a customers printer a few weeks ago. Decided to do them a favour and visit them on my day off as they were desperate to fit a DX4 printhead to their Mimaki JV4. Stormed up there (against the missus better judgement), fitted the head and thought I’d back flush their other heads as they were deflecting, syringe and pipe parted company with eachother and pushed cleaning solution all over their ‘working’ printhead. Well, not any more 😳 Magenta firing constantly as a result of an electircal fault on the head. (Obviously I replaced the head for them the following day and didn’t charge them).

If you’ve tried changing the cable positions on the slider/carriage board and the fault remains with the head, it’s pretty much certain that it will need replacing I’m afraid 🙁

Yer similar machines, the opal tiara being lyson’s version with different firmware as well as different inks.
Take it you’ve tried the good cable & controller together on the suspect head?
Will check to see if there is anything else you can do.

if u run the jv3 with the head cover off, the ribbon cable hits the chassis/casing… luckily it never did do damage.

    i feel both ur pain

    Cheers guys.

Tech coming to us Monday morning…

over the phone they didn’t think the head (as all firing) – they think controller…will see.

…however nippy-sore the bill is it’s better than having a dead machine and hundreds / thousands of pounds worth of work not getting done the longer it’s not running.

Had to buy print today to complete a job – the first time in a while….man, it sucked.

Whatever happens, we’re looking at getting a second (new) machine and consigning the Tiara to running banners to reduce waste.

Had the tech (Chris from QPS) today.

The guy works like a machine…

Popped the fuse on the main board (soldered in a new one).

Replaced all the dampers (as the ones I’d bought online for ‘solvent’…were apparently not suitable)…

    Heads re-aligned etc. etc.

3 hours & a ‘wow…how much!?’ for the various bits: dampers (went ‘sod-it’ just do all 8) & ribbon cables and it’s running.

OK, did have to call him back 2 hours later for a bit of snagging…but it’s now working as good as it can be for an old girl.

Going to be red-hot with all the work backed up for the last few days!

Just glad it’s sorted, and no major parts (heads / boards) requiring replacing…expensive enough.
