Posted by John McNickle on 19 September 2012 at 18:05Hi i am looking at ajob for a funeral director and he wants it to look like granite gravestone material, then i will be routering out the name etc and inlaying with silver or gold, i was just hoping you guys would know of a good material to use 🙂 i can get Corian from a friend and it would be the best job but it is crazy money for the size i need 🙁 i dont think he would go with 19mm foam painted and heave perspex is mega bucks too

My thoughts are to find a suitable textured vinyl to use to wrap a panel with in order to create a granite like finish.
Maybe something in the grafityp range of films?

cheers for getting back Phil, i had thought about doing this but i was a bit concerned about the vinyl still looking good in a few years, i know it would have 5 yrs at least but a good panel with its own finish will always win, its still a very big option at the moment

Many years ago I came across a product I believe called sign rock but at that time was only available in 4 x 2 sheets upto 50nm deep I recall, it did have a high cost though but could router and engrave into it.
However, if you think foam painted is too expensive this wouldn’t work but a great material when finished.

Sam ive just had a supplier on with me about a product call signblock and it looks the job, its pricey but not too bad and it only comes 4′ X 4′ but can butt together nice, it is also nice and light but looks heavy so there is a win point.. if i get the job and go with this ill put a few pics up

Hi John, that is great news, would very much like to see how it work outs for you, presume you can router this material as per sign rock – I do remember like most porous products it may take a lot of finishing but worth it for the end result.
Keep me posted as I am interested?

Exterior Medite, run a frame on the back, fill all the edges so it looks solid and correct thickness, router the letters, then have a faux paint/paint effects specialist put a fake marble finish on it. Fill lettering with gold etc. Apply 3 to 4 coats of sprayed exterior varnish.
Bit of work, but with a good effects painter, would look the part. -
Material Sam was referring to was SignRoc, or HDU foam.Expensive but a great material for carving and finishing. I finished it in waterbased paints and it lasted for years. Has a texture though, so might not be suitable for a faux marble finish.
I got it in Dublin, I can look up the supplier if you want, it was at least 10 yrs ago though.

John how deep do you need to route?
I would still of though Corian was suitable mounted on to some sort of backing.
I believe you can get 6mm , 12.5mm & 19mm. -
Cheers Harry and Tim for getting involved, Harry if there was a supplier this side of the water it might help, worth a try anyway as im just outside belfast, the delivery on 4 4’X4′ sheets from england was £80 + VAT 😮
Tim i can still use corian but its about £1500 at the least and thats before machining and inlays, fitting etc 🙁
