  • High quality Grand format Art printing / mounting

Our core market is photographic art printing, using a Canon ipf8300 and mounting to either 2mm aluminium or DiBond, often with a drytac cold laminate on the face for aesthetic and protective reasons.
A regular client (artist) is looking to get some of his images printed up for the interior of a restaurant, to the same quality as we do, but way beyond our capacity: images 2500×3000 and 4000×3300. Ideally supplied as a single sheet, or *seamlessly* joined, onto Dibond with mounting subframe, and delivered to an as yet unknown location in London.
I’m not really looking to sub the work, rather to point the client to a supplier whose quality will be first class. Any recommendations?

well, keeping in the board rules, dibond is "big" and you do require protection.
Most sheets come in 2000×3000 sizes but we do source 2000×4000.

Other factors u need to know is UV ink can be difficult to laminate/protect.
Some printers can struggle to print that size without failure, not all.

Suggest wall paper printing, might be easier 😉

Thanks Dave, yes, to me, anything taller than I am is Big (including printers); am I not supposed to ask about Big here…?

I’m assuming (very much open to correction) that UV direct to substrate is reasonably durable (I’m picturing hoardings on Regent Street), and that there are some seriously high quality machines that can be very effectively colour managed?
If so, and given the constraints of the sizes in which DiBond is available, are there Big suppliers who focus on print quality, or should I get some rolls of "wall paper paper" and run them out here and place a laminate over the top…

well unless you got a van big enough, do you trust the carrier companies?
its a pain in the ass if they get damaged.

Hordings, we printed them direct UV onto painted panels, its okay and quite strong to resistance. Matt dibond is "okay" for adhesion, not all of the manufacturers are printable.

Richard, sorry can’t help with supplier but why has the artist asked for it to be in one piece? is there a particular reason for this? Main reason I ask is because not only are you going to have trouble sourcing media large enough but you are also going to have major problems with transportation & installation.
Lamination is always a good idea for anything that is in a public area, as well as making it more durable will also help if the print needs to be cleaned in any way.

What about this as an option ?

Again, thanks Dave for a wake up re delivery, seeing how tricky it can be to get perfect sheets of 8×4 dibond from suppliers.
And Martin, in one piece is the way the artist has always presented the work. Tbh, I suspect he would not accept the work in sections.
John, looks like an interesting option, do you have experience of the quality? For this particular client we tend to run the 8300 at its maximum quality.
I’ll look further in to the details in the cold light, but given that the production costs for a 1000mm print for him can hit >£150, I suspect the restaurant might revise their plans.

Thanks again for the valued advice.

I use to install this sort of thing alot with 3m wide raffa canvas glue to the wall. I did this for service graphics they printed at 600dpi and it’s used in offices and department stores high quality prints.

I also use to install for spirit display these systems are also very good for changing the print without damaging the wall and they stand off the wall so dont show any bumps in the wall through the print.
