  • Summa D120 – Cutting Problems

Posted by Adrian Neill on 19 July 2012 at 13:02

Good afternoon everyone. We seem to have developed a little problem with our Summa D120. For some reason the cutter isn’t finishing off the letters properly. Strangely enough though, it doesn’t seem to happen on all the letters.

We have a new ‘smart blade’ in and the offset is set correctly. The plotter is in fairly good nick and moveable parts look clean and free of any old vinyl etc so i’m a bit stumped really.

I’ve attached a picture of some text that was cut on the Summa this afternoon. The text is about 20mm tall, so not small at all.

If anyone has any ideas where I could look next it’d be very helpful. Cheers.

    Hi Kevin.

    The pressure was on 70g.
The cutting mat does have wear, although no ‘nicks’ or anything.

Maybe we should try a new cutting mat too. I think I have a spare knocking about.

maybe the grip part under the pinch rollers needs cleaning…
toothbrush and a bit of meths gets the bits from round the teeth so it feels rough again…especially the one on the right…

    Hi
does it have the problem all the way across the machine, try cutting an "A" as in the pic but duplicate it the full width of the machine then check what is good & what is bad if its restricted to a localised area then its probably the strip. I’m presuming the offset is set to .45. Have you tried different file/font etc ?
Has overcut been altered ? Did this start when you changed the blade maybe try another blade.

check also that it might be where you have put in a new blade that the holder where it sits has cracked or broken or not gone in properly…

Another thing to check is that there is no free play on the drive motor spindle pulley – if the grub screw is loose then free play can develop.

Wow !! thanks for all the help !! …. this place really is great.

I have done that test cut across the width and it seems a little inconsistent, but it has been a while since we’ve changed the cutting mat. I thought I had one in stock, but unfortunately not …. so i’ll order today a new cutting mat and hopefully get that changed on Monday-Tuesday.

I’ll check the screws and give the rollers a good clean and hopefully with all that we’ll be back in business again.

Thank god we have a Graphtec too or it’d be even more a pain in the backside.

    Hi everyone.

I’ve put a new ‘smart blade’ in, changed the cutting mat and cleaned the bottom rollers (they certainly needed doing), but we’re still getting this intermittent problem.

I think i’d better check that grub screw that you mentioned Phil. I’ve had this machine apart before, but not quite sure where that grub screw is ….. roughly whereabouts would I find it ? Cheers.

    Adrian,

I know this post is a month old but did you get your Summa sorted out? As I read through I noticed that you set the pressure at 70. That’s a little lite, try 120. According to the manual for my D60 120 is the default setting. Here is a link to the user manual for the SummaCut series. http://www.summa.be/download/oldcut_en.pdf

that looks like a lazy solenoid as its the starts that are missing using a very low pressure would show it up more.

anyway hope its fixed by now
