J Welsh: Hand Painted Wall Murals – Gallery
Posted by Jill Marie Welsh on 22 June 2012 at 22:49This is for a local shop, to use as a backdrop for the fancy Christmas trees they sell.
I had a lot of fun painting it.
All latex paint.
(sorry about the cheesecake shot first)

I love cheesecake 😉 great job Jill, love it, and not a printer, image or cut vinyl in sight 😎

Sort of job I’d like to be doing more of! I have done some trompe l’oeil type works and pictorial signs, they are on here somewhere but dont know how you would find ’em !!!
-
Wonderful Jill….you must have gained such job satisfaction from that!
-
Great job Jill, love the flow of that. Will look amazing with greenery around it. Be sure to get a pic of it when they dress the set!

Thank you.
The idea came from a catalog the lady had, with santas all through it.
But she didn’t want any Santa images.
So I did just the trees, and talked her into adding a rural farm scene (because that’s what it’s like where I live) with a stubble field.
I did version of the trees, sketched on acetate then projected onto the wall at random, painted with a roller and 1" foamies.
The cardinal is because there will be three more panels, one featuring a picture from the catalog with a deer in front of trees with cardinals in his stylized antlers.
The other two panels will have sort of a gnomish woodland creature (reminiscent of Harry) and a snowman. I wanted to do a scarecrow with a withered pumpkin head but she didn’t care for that sketch.

thank you for taking the time to post your pictures.

Look’n good Jill. This should lead to more cool work. Make up a flier and get the word out

Jill I really love it.
Question. What was your criteria for the darker sky colour? You have used some branches to frame the colour change, and it really works! -
Jill…you are a star!
Great technique to achieve the effect of light and dark and the snow flakes perfectly balanced. It’s easy to over do something like this, adding a little bit more than necessary (if that makes sense).
well done my girl

Simon, the darker sky thing was really just a happy accident.
I started off at the bottom and worked my way up, periodically stepping back to check my progress. I found I liked the darker sky up top because it somehow added depth/height.
Plus I was kind of tired of the 10′ ladder after working 7 hours at the deli each day prior to painting. I never get to sit down there.
😀
Martin, I know what you mean about the balance of the snowflakes, it would be easy to go overboard. My friend Bruce always says "Art is knowing when to stop", and I worried that I might go too far.
The other panels are going to have the same effect but with more detail and metallic treatments.
Thanks for the nice words. This has been a very rewarding project. -
lovely work as always jill, your looking well in your cheescake pic 😉

They’re fantastic young Jill!
Have you thought about releasing those as a Christmas card collection too? They’d have to be slightly smaller of course 😕
Did you project these or draw straight on to the wall?
Keep the pics coming they’re a delight to see. -
Thanks Neil.
(young? Only 3 weeks shy of 50 now ugh)
This was a combination of projector and ad-lib drawing, and just plain freehand.
My mate had my projector for over 3 years and I practically had to pry it back off of him. He says he needs it back ASAP.
🙄
The last phase is lettering a phrase on the wall to direct patrons upstairs.
I may use the "Misfit Toys" font. -
