Opening ‘new’ AI files in CorelDraw
Posted by Daniel Warren on 8 May 2012 at 15:07Someone sent me a .ai file to cut.
I went to open it in my rather old version of CorelDraw, and it wouldn’t support it. I forget the exact message that popped up. Will try again later and paste it in here.
They have since tried sending it in both PDF and EPS format, but this is going to result in retracing if any ammendments are needed?, so wondered in this situation what people do regarding file formats for receiving artwork.
Is there an option, similar to as in Word for example where you can save it as an older version so it is compatabl with older versions?
Thanks.

The artwork should be able to be saved in an earlier version but I think that in this game it looks unprofessional if you don’t have software which at least supports recent versions.
Another alternative would be to take out a membership on here and then you could post it here so someone can save it for you.
Hope that this helps.

Thanks for your reply Gary.
While I am dipping my toes to see if this business is for me, I am doing simple small work which has been created from word of mouth.
I haven’t invested in up to date software as I am unsure if this is something I will be able to commit to.
I figured rather than investing heavily initially and tackling work beyond my ability, I would work through simple small jobs.
The sign trade is something I have had a real interest in for a long time. I consistently put it off while I have been working full time, but as I am now reaching a stage where I am unhappy in my day job I would like to do something I actually have an interest in.
So I decided to start ‘playing’ and almost give it a go to satisfy myself that I have tried rather than not try at all.
I cue the ‘everybody is at it and thinks they can turn a quick buck with a cutter devaluing the trade with low quotes and small margins’ and ‘leave it to the pros’.
Perhaps I am going about it all the wrong way. But in my current position I am not sure how else to tackle it. I don’t yet have the skills to leave my current job and focus on investing in all the gear with no idea – which is why I decided to give it a go on a very small scale to sort of test the water.
I really don’t intend to start an argument, and I know there will probably be some comments of hard feeling similar to what I mentioned above, but by all means shoot me down in a discussion – as it may even help me come to terms with how I should go about all of this.
The last thing I like to do in any situation is let people down. Which is another reason why I want to learn from my mistakes now with small things, than get confident and fail completely and dramatically.

Hi mate…. Sorry if it came across like I was stirring an argument as that wasn’t my intention… An upgrade with Corel isn’t that expensive and certainly worth considering

No offense taken Gary. That wasn’t an outburst at you, apologies if it sounded that way. I was expecting others to add on to your comment so thought I’d get in there first with an explanation of why I am running CorelDraw11.
If I’m honest, I thought an upgrade would be a good few hundred. I now see it’s half that. (this is providing X5 can be upgraded on top of such an old version – for some reason I remember reading on here that it wasn’t possible, I could be wrong).
I looked into getting the latest Adobe CS a while go and at several hundred pounds it was a bit too much of a stretch for this stage.

Daniel – it’s not what you’ve got that counts, it’s how you use it! 😉
Nothing could be more true in the world of design. I’ve been using Corel v12 since the day it was released and it does everything I need. Just recently I came across a manipulation requirement that wasn’t supported by Cv12. I’ve asked on here if other packages would do it and nobody was able to point to a solution. I did the job anyhow – it just took me longer than if there had been a dedicated function for it.
It’s probably true that the latest version will offer me a whole lot more than my current version but I don’t think it’s going to add to my inspiration so I won’t bother to upgrade until I feel the need.
Garry’s right about folk expecting a business to have the latest versions (of everything), but there are ways around that. I don’t use AI but I’d expect it can save in older versions.
Committing full time to a new business *is* a big step and a risk, but I don’t think you’ll find out if you can do it unless you try. Doing small jobs in your spare time really won’t tell you yes or no. I think the best way to get wet is to jump right in. Probably depends on just how the market is in your local area and the degree of competitor saturation. We’ve all been there and unless there happens to be a boom at the time then (apart from the prerequisite design abilities) it’s down to hard work and perseverance, and sometimes being in the right place at the right time and of course luck!
Just thinking out loud …

CS5 can save back as far as version 3, but I seem to remember version 8 or 9 being the most stable for Corel 12, so get them to try that.
