advice for shop window graphic
i have been asked to do a complex shop window graphic, with multi colours,
i can draw it and cut it, but is the normal way to apply the vinyl on the inside or outside of the glass?
inside i don’t think it would be possible to layer it and get the registration correct, outside i could, but the danger would be people peeling parts off.i think i woild be better off looking at printed vinyl, and if so, the question would be, would the colours be as vibrant from the outside if the vinyl was applied to the inside – if you get what i mean, as the graphic would face into the shop?

multi-layer work is easily achievable using registration marks, but i use registration lines.
its the very same process but everything is cut in reverse.
you then apply the last layer first and so on. -
thanks for the reply, i’ve done layering before, but not as complex as this,
trouble is i will have to start with the pupils and work out, so getting them lined up would be critical,i have given it more thought, and, would the best method be to print out the graphics with a plotter pen, then tape them to the outside of the window to give me a guide?

I would just get it printed far easier and quicker to apply.

to be honest mate, now i have had a look at your artwork, i would have the whole thing over sized by about .5 inch in length.
reverse printed onto clear digital vinyl and laminated in regular white vinyl.
you could easily contour cut this by hand.fit in one go and Job done.
when trimming/contour cutting. you may need some sort of light source underneath to show up the graphics outline. because you want see much other wise.
that said, you could trim up near the outline, then fit on the window and THEN trim as the glass will act as a lightboax type thing with daylight showing through the print.multilayer is fine, but will be very time consuming in this case just producing the cut graphics.
you then have the task of laying it up, slowly and with the chance of a layer sequence out.
a trade printer will do this in jig time and pop it in the post for you. -

Hmmm now theres a thought. I dont buy in prints unless they are very big and i cant do myself.
give Macroart.com a go, but stipulate that the prints are being viewed close up and that they need to be reverse printed, white backed laminate and you could, to save you any hassle, as for them to contour cut it. they will then come ready to fit. you will pay a little more but not much. i recon good savings on hwat it would cost you to get all those shades of vinyl and produce in house.

There’s also PS2 Digital, they printed a job on clear for me, as it was cheaper than buying in a roll.
