Where do you advertise and promote your vinyl sign business?
Posted by Neil Beckett on 19 April 2012 at 23:49Hi all,
Other than websites I was wondering where everyone else advertises? Do most people still use Yellow pages? what else?
Will be interested to hear what has and has not worked for people.
cheers,

I joined a Networking group.
There are a few out there, but I chose BNI. Who only allow 1 trade in each chapter.
Yes I have to get up early every wednesday morning, and yes I joined one over the other side of Manchester, and yes it costs around £1k over the year.
But I’ve had plenty more than that in return…
Its not for everybody but worth looking at. I know chapters near me don’t have many sign co’s in them.

I run a window film business & a sign business alongside each other.
For the window film I cover the whole of Cumbria from the scottish borders down to Lancaster and find my website (with links from as many directories as possible) does most of the business, however some of the work is for retired people with conservatories, so they still search Yellow pages. For commercial links I direct mail and send a newsletter to local builders, glass companies, double glazing companies and building maintenance companies and have built up a network of local firms who use me, that is then useful for testimonials.
My sign making is much more locally orientated as there are so many companies out there so nearly all my work comes from the local town paper with a regular weekly classified, as well as word of mouth and knowing a large group of local businesses. -

I used BNI for my first 2 years in business and found it good for inter group work but not for referrals. It depends on the group I think. My local group closed and was combined with a group 40 miles away and I then didn’t get anything so left. A free to join local group started which again was good for a while but soon dried up as it became a sort of self employed persons self help group rather than a business referral group. Still very worthwhile joining these groups to make contacts though.

Internal Group referrals are a plenty in my group.
I focused loads on print, because of the space issue, which worked well. I have several trade customers who whilst selling at a discounted rate, put plenty of business my way.
Now I am moving, I am making a big U turn onto what will then be the next easiest thing, vehicle graphics.
Signage I can handle smaller jobs ie: shop signs, but it’s sourcing someone to install them.
