  • stand off locators – fine lettering

Posted by Phill Fenton on 5 April 2012 at 18:00

I am doing some signs featuring stand off lettering for a client. Some of the lettering has very fine strokes (6mm) and my usual supplier of CNC routed lettering has advised me that the minimum stroke to fit stand off locators to would be 12mm.

I have explained this to my client and suggested we glue these letters directly onto the sign board but he is adamant he wants these letters to stand proud of the board just like the rest of the lettering. I don’t want to increase the thickness of the lettering .

Any ideas if (and how) this could be done ?

If using 5mm perspex, drill hole in back of letters and either glue or thread and insert 4mm threaded bar in to hole. Make template up as normal and use a spacer, same size as existing locators, between the letter and facia. Make sure threaded bar is long enough to go into facia.

    Phil
picked up some samples from Trade signs at the show, locators went down to a diameter of approx 8mm.

Not quite sure how small bighead fasteners go but I have cut them down in the past to fit text with a narrow stroke.
Bit time consuming but if the customer is adamant that’s what he wants I would rather do that than fit them to a rod or a rail.
