Mimaki JV33-160 – Poster Paper Profile – Help!
Hey guys,
Can anyone help me with an issue i have with printing on to poster paper? I have recently purchased a 200gsm roll of satin poster from paper graphics. However, they do not have a profile for the JV33-160. I am running rasterlink 5 SG. I have spoken to hybrid but they were not able to offer me much help. They suggested i drop the ink density to -15% but after trying this i still am seeing poor results. I have even tried running it at 6 passes and increased the pre/during/post heat settings also but no luck. Any suggestions and help would be most appreciated! I have a job which is supposed to be ready for Wednesday morning so your urgent assistance would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

so what is the problem?
colour balance?
not curing?
roller pattern?
ink pooling?when you print grey it comes out green or red or blueish?
I doubt u find a profile… you just got to keep rotating profiles until you find one that works in that case… look at whiteness and compare it with another product you got.
printers like the jv33 are sensitive to medias, so getting perfect colour control does require good profiles

Dave, the image is blurry. Also, I think too much ink is being used and the print is not drying quick enough even though I’ve increased the temprature. However, when I drop the density level to -15% some colours start saturating.

I’ve used the same material on exactly the same set – up, We mostly use mac-tac vinyl, so I just ran is off the normal mac-tac profile 12 pass 720 x 1080 didn’t change anything. The images came out perfect.
Try it a higher pass.

We use the same profile as on vinyl, although depending on the image, we sometimes
have to up the pass rate. You should be OK with 40 pre / 45 print temps. This is using Onyx. -
could also be the paper itself that does not accept your inks.
On my mimaki, a said "solvent printable" blue back paper from my main supplier gives very bad results with SS21 inks (I simply can’t sell this product) although gives good results with roland inks…

Guys, attempted increasing the pass to both 12 and 24 but still seeing a blurry print. Please see the attached images. Have also tried dropping the ink density to -15% but these combinations are not working for me. Do you have any other ideas?

to me it just looks like its not compatible with your inks.
i think its the same paper i use and its photo quality, roland printer and inks.
vinyl profile 720×720 8 pass about 240 max ink level it does not dry that quick but a quality finish. -

have not got a clue unless its got roland on it.
you could try a high res profile 720×1440 med no of passes this should lay the ink finer, helps when the material is not cooperating.

Already tried adjusting the pass rates, resolution, ink density and heating but no luck.
Any Mimaki Bods there able to help?

I had the exactly same print problem with my mimaki and a blue back paper (same results as on your pctures).
I can’t help with an other media but you should ask your supplier for ra Mimaki compliant paper.

I printed some wrapping paper on my Roland on some blue back, as thats what the customer requested, and had the same problem.
Personally I don’t touch the stuff, it took over 1hour to print 1 A0 poster, and I had 4 to run.
Set the machine to Omni Directional, heaters on full, and full width scan (don’t know if you can on the Mimakis)
What this seemed to do was give the ink enough to time to dry on the paper before the next pass, and reduced the pooling.

Have you tried any different profiles? We had to try about 5 before we found one that worked. Looks like the ink isn’t drying quick enough, and it’s putting too much ink down. You could try upping the temperature on the print heater. If the material cockles, turn the pre-heat right down, or even off. We use 200gsm gloss poster from Pyramid (it is a Sihl product called Tri-Solv), with excellent results on JV3 and JV33, with Onyx.
PS….as David says, make sure it runs uni-directional. We can run 6 pass uni with
heavy coverage on this paper with no problems, so I strongly suspect it’s the profile. -
That looks like ink pooling to me. The ink is just sitting on the surface of the media and running together. Is it definitely a solvent paper?
If you’re looking for alternatives, the ones I used to get best results on a JV3 are Emblem Blueback or Hybrids own Satin Solvent Paper.

225gsm But the ink is pooling on top! I’ve tried both sides of the sheet..

I couldn’t get it working so in the end tried a few alternatives and found one at colourbyte that did the trick. However, the ink does still take a little longer to dry so a combo of increasing temprature perhaps using a higher pass rate is the way to go.
This is the poster paper i’m using on the Mimaki = TM208 – Smooth Silk Paper 180gsm. You can find it on the same page you sent me the link for. Hope this helps.
However, i now do most of my poster/backlit printing on a Canon IPF8400S now which i baught after experiencing all of those issues. Its photographic quality so is far superior to the Mimaki in quality. But if i need a larger poster than i use the Mimaki.
