VP540- Banding problem please help.
Posted by Ernest Seyram on 13 March 2012 at 10:07Am experiencing banding in my cyan & magenta which l don’t understand because l have changed the cap top, done several cleaning, dumpers are not even 6weeks old. All my nozzles are firing in the test print. I did a bi-direction calibration and feed calibration. I had my heat on 40C. No matter what I seem to do I still get banding in the cyan & magenta.
l have attached a picture for further explanation. Thx.Ernest Seyram replied 13 years, 8 months ago 6 Members · 17 Replies -

Hi Ernest
Can you upload a picture of nozzle test?
Are you sure that the cap top is sealing the heat tight?
To test it attach a syringe in the cap top small hose while the printer is off and suck the ink if you hear an air leak or you see bubbles in the syringe it means that it’s not seal the head. -

Looks to me like you have some nozzles out in the magenta, and a lot of deflection in
all of the colours. I would suggest a long head soak to see if they can be unblocked. I
don’t use a Roland, so maybe someone else could advise. -
Thanks Jamie,
l will soak them overnight and see what happens but before then any one
with any ideas will much appreciated. -
Hi.
As already mentioned, you have many deflections and missing nozzles on your test draw and they need to be rectified. Score you can get a perfect print. The magenta could even have physical damage by the look of the test draw.
If you can’t get the test draw any better, it could be a pump fault but in the meantime, you could try to double the pass rate of your print to hide the fault but it will take twice as long to print anything.
I hope that helps.

Thanks Cox,
I tried everything over the weekend but the problem is still there, so maybe
l will change the pump and see, because it has not been changed in a long time. But can that cause the noisy dots around the print. l can’t print small labels or decals anymore, cos its not sharp at al.l -
hm, first of all tell me what kind of inks and media u use?
How old r the heads also?
what r the conditions in the room – temp. and humidity? -
Thanks Ironma,
Inks are original roland eco-sol max and media is from Grafityp, UK
temp. is always btn 20-30C and humidity is btn 50-65%.l changed my pump yesterday as Cox advised but no joy. Still banding in cyan and noisy dots around text ( from 4pt upwards) in all prints.

I’m taking a guess at head(s) replacement.
But if you have the service manual you can look up the head shot count to see if they are way past their lifespan or not(if you don’t know how old they are) -
Hi there, well, as I see the nozzle check u have problems in all colors – magenta is worse. When u started to have this problem? And u didn’t answer how old r the heads.
-
The problem started about two two weeks ago. The heads are about two years old but the black head is just about 5weeks old. The shot count have not reached its span yet, said the roland tech.

Hm, what about the inks. R they fresh. Is it stamped on the cartridges when they produced. The problem started after changing the cartridges with new from supplier or?
Sometimes manufacturers change the ink suppliers they work with – this way my friend suffered with his printer (UV) – he was near to loose all heads of his machine – problems with UV inks are more than bad … so possible to be something like this. Reaction between 2 inks sometimes is followed with results like in your case.
Also, check your electrical system! Is it grounded? Did u make any changes switching the printer to another socket or coupler?
-
Thanks Ironma,
Its none of the above.
I want to ask, how do l solve the head misfiring? Because in the nozzle test print it looks more like misfiring, that’s what causing the noisy print.
I manage to minimize that by setting the head height to low. Also if the a cap top is not heat or air tight can it cause banding in that particular print head?.

Hi Ernest,
How old r the dampers and capers?
U can clean the dampers with ultrasonic cleaner, but u must check is the connection between the head and damper is tight (if u remove the damper too easy is not a good sign – o-ring gone). If u don’t have ultrasonic, u can flush the damper with Acetone. There is small circle steel net in the damper – maybe clogged. -
Yes, sorry, You wrote in your first massage. What about the pump – did u change it?
If yes, I’m starting to think about bad inks! Of course, if all of the parts changed are high quality one. -
Thanks man,
Yea, l changed the pumps.Am changing all my cap tops again an see what happens, although they are just a few weeks old.
