  • Blade offset or Overcut in VMP 2.5 help please

Posted by Clareblondie on 9 December 2011 at 21:10

    Hi there,

I have a Jinka 1351 plotter which i have now managed to get set up and cutting through vinyl master pro 2.5. But i am having issues where whatever i cut is not joining up. So when weeding i’m finding i have to cut the last little piece to complete the cut by hand which is not ideal.

I have a feeling i need to change the blade offset or enable the overcut setting. I have enabled the overcut setting but this has not worked but after a bit of web search i heard that to get this working on my type of plotter i need a patch? Also i read that my version of VMP does not have the option to change the blade offset.

Can anyone help me solve this problem please? I’m really starting to regret buying this plotter

claire, the only good thing i can read in your post is that you are regretting the purchase. sorry if that sounds harsh, i mean it in the best way. i just hate to read that folk like yourself get such a hard time when all you are trying to do is start your business. in a nutshell, cutters really should be plug and play if coupled with the right software.

anyway, i know you will be aware of this by now…
i cant help with the software as i run signlab for cutting. i cant help with the cutter as i havent even heard of that type. but your assumptions of the "offset" sound about right. either that or your media may not be loaded correct, slack/loose.
if the machine is not brand new, consider the blade carriage being loose or play in the cariage. this will also create issues such as graphics not closing. best of luck.

Thanks Robert for your reply. I am determind to get to the bottom of the issue even if it’s just to earn some extra cash to help me save for decent plotter and software.

It’s not the vinyl as checked that. Could be the blade holder but to be honest it doesn’t look in bad nick compared to the one at my full time work place. I really feel it’s the offset but unless someone knows a trick to change this in vinyl master pro 2.5 then I’m stumped : (

    Thanks again for your reply.

Claire i am sure vinyl master pro VMP has a support forum. not 100% but they did some years ago. might be worth checking.

as for the carriage. make sure the blade holder etc is all tight in place and then while holding the blad holder firm, sorta rock it back and forward and see if you can notice any play in it.

as said, most probably the offset thats the issue.

    best of luck.

Has your version of VMP got a dongle with it at all?

Reason I asked is because I was using V2.95 before I upgraded it to VMX and the USB dongle had some files on it for setting up plotters if I remember rightly.

I’ve never heard of jinka, is it a Chinese plotter?

I run a chinese unit (admittedly just started) and like yourself spent many an hour trying to get the things to work properly. In hindsight I would have preferred to get up and running with a Roland or the likes and have decent support – but couldn’t justify the outlay, don’t know the business and wasn’t sure (still) whether I would get off the ground.

I’m slowly learning and will eventually invest in decent machinery with good aftercare.

Anyway, I digress. Keep at it. Have a good google, someone will have had the same problem no doubt. It probably wont be easy to find but will more than likely be out there. Are the cutting program/manufacturers easy to get hold of?

I was able to find a guide written on my plotter and then implement the settings into mine and it’s spot on now. Although I am ‘all the gear no idea’.

I’d be surprised if the option to change offset wasn’t available.

Not sure if any cutting program’s are still offering free trials, but could be worth looking down that route to see if other program’s with the option to change offset sort your issues.

Thanks for the replies so far. I was told by the guy I bought the plotter from that it is a jinka. The manual that came with it (albeit very basic) says ROHS cutting plotter on the front page. The sticker on the side of plotter says name of plotter: cutting plotter. Type number: MT1351

Maybe this info might shed some light for anyone in the know??? Please?

There was an article on here about setting up a plotter, have a look through the older posts as all the info you need may well be already on the site.
If you need to contact anyone about the software your using try this link, great bunch of guys and always ready to try and help if they can.

Claire, i use vinylmaster also with a Creation P Cut Plotter, this is how i change my blade offset, which is set at 0.3mm,

    Vinyl Spooler
    Plotter
    Configure Plotter
    Units
    Blade Compensation (on)
    Set offset

I also use the Smart Blades from Edward Mathias which come set up for your plotter, i find them great!

    Hope this helps

    Brian.

Brian, thanks for your reply, i will try that tonight. I downloaded Signblazer the other day and managed to change the offset in that which gave me better results when cutting. Still not perfect but there is an improvement. So slowly getting there : )

I will give your suggestions a go though, thank you.

One of the problems people seem to have with any plotter if they are new to them regardless of the make is setting the blade at the right depth, common problem is to have far to much of the blade sticking out of the holder. The branded plotters generally have a better set of instructions so setting this up is a bit easier.

The Smart blades that Brian mentioned are great because this is all done for you, cost more initially because you have to buy the holder as well as the blade but once you have one you just send it back and they send you a new one and you just pay for the price of the blade.

If you have a couple of them, buy a second when money allows it means the plotter is always available and you don’t have to wait till the new one arrives.

Thanks for the info. I have run plotters in my full time job for 10 years, so i know how much of the blade should be showing. I just am not used to a plotter with such limited options. If only i had lots of money to buy a known brand.

I will look into the blade supplier though, thanks.

Offset/Blade Compensation was introduced with the Dongle version of VinylMaster in 2004 which also came with a new Vinyl Spooler. So V2.5 being an update from mid-1990s software didn’t have this feature because nearly all plotters from that era had offset built in.

    Thanks,
