  • Setting up Graphtec 5000/60 with mac OSX lion

Posted by Billy Lawton on 7 November 2011 at 22:44

Hi guys – I’ve just bought a new graphtec 5000/60 and before I get it all out of the box I thought I would do the "non-man" thing and read the manual! I’m so confused about this "cutting master" & "cutting master 2" ! I understand it’s the cutters software – I’m using Illustrator 5.5 and will use the plugin.

Any advice out there on what I should watch out for on software install / knife setting etc?

    Cheers

Hi there, just plug and play, not sure if it will work with Lion but I don’t see why not as you are running 5.5
    Give it a go.

    Hi Billy

I have my Graphtec working perfectly with lion but the driver only got released Sunday so I doubt you will have it with the cd

Just connect it to the mac via USB, download the new driver from the net, you need cutting master v1.85, check out the Graphtec forum on this site as I posted a link as I’m not sure if it’s on the uk site yet.

Install the driver and it might say that it can’t find the plug in folder, just point it to the illustrator plug in folder and you’re done. Start illustrator and go to file > cutting master and just follow the instructions at first about setting it up then once that’s done it’s pretty simple to use.

    Hope this helps

Thank you very much Daniel – that’s a great help – I’m setting it up later this week / excited! I make music stands and this will be perfect for us to create the front graphics http://www.bigbandstands.com

    You’re very kind to help.

Hi Billy, I’m pretty sure you’ll have no problem.
We use OSX Lion with Flexisign with no issues with our Graphtecs.
As Daniel says you may just need to download the update.

Hi guys – thanks for your advice.

I’ve set up the ce5000/60 – installed the cutting master2 & plugin successfully – and the "test" cut works perfectly.

When I try to cut from within illustrator it says I don’t have something called "print manager" installed? I can’t find that on my install cd or the graphtec website – any ideas please? The support guys where I bought it at MDP supplies are not available until Monday – agghh!

    Thank you!

I’ve never had that issue. Just to clarify, when you use illustrator, you are clicking cutting master at the bottom of file and not print?

If so talks us through what version of cutting master / illustrator / lion you are using?

Hi Daniel – I am dropping down the file menu and going to print – I guess I’m used to just sending to a printer – so I should select "cut master" instead? I’ll try that now.
I assume then that sheet size / scale / position on vinyl is all in there? (ive seen this on YouTube!)
I’m using OSX Lion and Illustrator CS5.5

Where are you based? Do you offer a training course? I think I need to invest in one!

Thank you so much again – once I see the correct route I’ll be fine!

I’ve had another look – and in Illustrator I drop down the "File" menu, I have 2 options under "Cutting Master 2" – "Registration Marks" or "Cut/Plot" – when I choose "Cut/Plot" it starts spooling "Connecting to Production Manager" and then I get an error message saying "Connection Failed – could not connect to Production Manager".

I guess this means that I don’t have "Production Manager" installed ! – Although I can’t find it on the install CD or on the Graphtec website – confused.com!

    Hi Billy

No training course i’m afraid, i’ve just learnt by people on here and trial and error.

OK, CS5 and Lion will work, again to double check you need version 1.85 of cutting master driver, NEEDS TO BE 1.85.

You’re doing the right thing by going to cutting master > Cut/Plot, it just sounds like you’ve not pointed cutting master to the cutter.

Connect the cutter via usb, draw a square or something then goto file > cutting master > Cut/Plot

When you first install cutting master, it will ask you what cutter you have, select you model, then it will ask to confirm setup name, i just click next, then it asks to confirm the location, change this from serial to USB, and it should pop up in the white box, if not click search and as long as it’c connected via usb it will show up here, once that’s done your done.

If you’ve somehow skipped this step, when you click cutting master > Cut/Plot, there is a box at the top of the menu, here’s where i think you can change it from serial to USB.

Hopefully this helps, if not let me know.

    Hi Daniel.

Problem 1 solved – I set up the cutter in the next room (ony 3 metres away) and I used a USB repeater cable – so I brought the cutter next to the Mac and used only the USB cable that came with it and it’s seeing it fine now!

The only problem is I probably need to read the manual now – when I go to "cut/plot" it goes into cutting master 2 perfectly, and when I send I get an "HPGL 1" error, and when I hit "Enter" it goes, and the LCD reads "PEN 1"

I’ll call support on Monday – but I guess the cutter needs to be near the Mac!

    Thanks again!

    OK i know the problem.

On the graphtec, you have a menu that you need to go through, change the COMMAND to GPGL mode. Here’s how, press Pause>Next>COMMAND>GPGL>ENTER

Hopefully that should sort it, let me know.
