New Beginner from London!
Posted by Ken Tran on 2 September 2011 at 23:21Hi everyone! Feels like a great community here on UK SB!
I’m 24, recently graduated from Maths with a passion for web & graphic design.
New to ‘sign making’ with less than a years experience. Really looking forward to learn a lot 🙂Starting off with personalised cut vinyls on my site and another which are both far from complete (but getting there).
Done a few bonnet wraps outdoors and wanting to experience full wraps indoors. Hopefully become professional & offer this as a service someday 🙂Not well-off enough to purchase the best machinery/workspace but definitely looking to gain more experience as an apprentice if there’s anything available out there!

Go ken, those with the ideas and passion will make it regardless of finance 😉 welcome fella, you will learn a lot of good stuff here from some of the best in the world….
Don’t ask me tho…… I know nothing 😉
Nik, you gotta get further away from the lens…… 🙄

Thanks Nik & Mo for an instant welcome! Appreciate the inspiration since there are a lot of complex procedures in sign making which look very difficult!
Really want to become a pro someday…

Nah, really it’s easy peasy… we all just make it look complex so that most people wont even bother trying to come in to the market place. Only those who don’t fear to tread will find out just how simple it is 😉
Also it helps keep the prices up if the customers thinks it complex too 🙄
Dive in, make mistakes, and have a go, it’s the only way to learn, this is not a book reading course (but I do recommend reading phil "the legend" fentons book first, it’s a good starting block)

Hi and welcome Ken, good luck in your new venture.
Please put your prices up though – don’t give it away!!!

welcome to the boards Ken, great to have you here mate.
This forum isnt really for discussing pricing etc but as has been said…
Your prices are too low![size=84]* As this is your "Intro Post", please take a moment to look over our Board Rules.
* Please also consider loading your own Profile Picture to accompany your posts. [spec on profile pictures can also be found in Board Rules ]
This is not an necessity, but it is fact, posts accompanied by a full proper user-name and photograph get much more help/advice/replies than those without.

* You may also find the following FREE to download Toolbar very useful for your Sign Making business. UKSB TOOLBAR

Robs right Ken, the prices on your web site will put you out of business faster than you can blink an eye…. I soon learned that lesson, fortunately not too late, you should be doubling them at least, it’s not all about price fella…..

Sorry for the late reply guys, wasn’t receiving any notifications.
Thanks for your advice about the prices, I based them on what I saw off ebay and set up some sample products. Website is not fully functional at the moment and still setting up my products.
I will definitely be increasing them by at least double as recommended.
Sorry about that , I’m still new to this and appreciate your feedback!

good to hear mate…
your pricing is crucial in business. as you develop, your outgoings "will increase" but being able to simply increase your prices will not be just as easy.the best advice i can give you is steer clear of ebay, especially when it comes down to setting the pricing for your business.

Have taken the advice and have finally set up a small workshop a few weeks ago!
– Going through The Prince’s Trust, I wonder if anyone else did too?
Now, waiting for my membership to be activated! 🙂

It’s been about just over a year since I joined UKSB and the information has been so valuable!
Started out with vinyl cut logos and now specialising in canvas frames, encapsulated large format posters and general signage on correx, acrylic and foamalux.
A big thank you to all the members who have helped and the website in general!
