  • How to construct a curved totem 10ft x 4 ft?

Posted by Eamon Hughes on 4 August 2011 at 15:53

Hi, potentially we have to construct a curved totem pole with a brushed dibond face. Usually we stick to the flat panels but we are going to give this one a go.
Can anyone offer us any advice or pointers how to go about this? If we fabricate a curved steel frame could we persuade the panel around it?
    Thanks

How about using aluminium? It is more flexible than dibond. Or you can buy curved totems ready made from Spandex, Ashby etc.

more or less the same as a standard totem, only use 10 mm foamex ribs to shape
    rough principle shown,

make sure you ribs are correctly aligned, and the ACM will pull around the face easily enough,

I’m busy doing a truckload of these at the moment. It is a Country-wide contract for the biggest paint manufacturer in Namibia.

I just make the frame (in this case aluminium square tubing) a bit narrower than the panel (2mm abs) – That forces the panel out in a curve.

With Dibond you may have to roll the panels. Take them to a sheetmetal workshop to run through their rolers

We do much like Ian suggested, but we have a circular pole running up the middle. Probably can do without the pole though. Here’s a link to the pdf with a tech isometric drawing. It’s quite similar to Ian’s drawing. http://www.apcosigns.com/techpdf/spcurve.pdf Some of our parts are Water-jet cut or extruded though. Hope you sort it out Eamon.

    Nice sign Gert!
