I’d be interested to hear others opinions of Yell.com?
Posted by Phill Fenton on 1 August 2011 at 15:29I was recently persuaded to renew my subscription with an "enhanced" package that would cost the same as I was already paying.
It turns out I was miss sold – they have started taking a double payment and tried to justify it by saying the two campaigns were overlapping – so I was still paying for old campaign when the new campaign went live.
Not only that – but they had created a SEO webpage to advertise my business which has a telephone number that differs from my own. I had specifically told them in previous years that under no circumstances would I take out any adverts that had a telephone number that was not under my control.
I feel this is sharp practice.
I’d be interested to hear others opinions of Yell.com (good or bad)?

I remember them renting me a .co.uk domain for around £99 per year.
we had zero control over it and came with what they called a homepage.
it was a disaster, and not what i would have imagined it to be like, or i wouldn’t have been suckered into it. that was many years ago now, but once bitten and all that… š -

Marmite springs to mind when I think about them :lol1: Most people I know seem to either love them or hate them.
Just my opinion but it seems to depend on what sort of industry you are in. Seems to work really well for some things and not at all for others.
As I don’t do any advertising at all I haven’t got any personal experience with them good or bad.

lmao sorry… u know why i am laughing Lambie.. i never used that word before in my life..

The strange tel number is so they can track your page clicks and follow throughs. I think I am going to cancel mine as the click throughs do not justify the costs š„

We pulled out of yell this year – their rep said our business would stop trading after 6 months if we didn’t advertise with them !!!
I showed him where the door was…….John

I did a yell search for signmakers in your area John and I note you are still listed. In my area I find there are some companies still listed that ceased trading years ago. Makes a mockery of paying to advertise on Yell š

Perhaps that’s the reason i’m still trading then !!

i remember looking into this…
think we had 2 hits over a long period…. then i worked out it was myself testing the pages

and its just been pointed out to me that our listing in yell is actually there with all current details. but then says "visit our website" and when you click on it, it takes you to a franchise that shares the same name, but located in england! š :lol1:
we dont pay for yell listings but do pay for a 1/4 page advert in one yellow pages and a 1/8 page advert in another… but then bugger up our online listing! š
thanks for the heads-up phill, letter being sent to them in the morning! š

Google have done to ‘Yellow Pages’ and nearly Yell.com what digital photography done to Polaroid and Kodak.
I have dropped them this time for the first time in 11 years.
Their statistics are way out and the company always lacked continuity year on year always blaming the previous years sales rep for not getting you the correct advert / package etc.
Just my opinion of course and dare say it works for some.

Nowdays Iām not sure if paying for an ad in yell.com or any other online directory has much (if any) value, if you put yourself in your potential customers shoes most will go and search on Google for what their looking for in their area eg: printers in Suffolk and get the relative results.
Having a free ad in some online directories helps showing up in these google results if your prepared for the sales people to ring you to upgrade etc.

I had some guy visit from Touch local, who are similar to Yell.com, they power several websites search facilities for jobs.
My point throughout the whole meeting was… but I don’t go to these web sites to search for a business… I go to google, I click the top few links… easy.
Sadly I cannot afford to get my website SEO’d… so just rely on word of mouth.

Guys, the best tip I every had was get every free listing that you can, everything that links to your site gets you up the google rankings. One of my best traffic drivers is google maps! (not on my signs)..
I’m on Yell and get a few calls from it, I think I paid about Ā£300 for a small listing in the directory and online. It’s paid for itself. One thing I have found online, is people like to search for local businesses when it comes to signs, so it pays to have lots of places close to you in your keywords, or meta tags.
I get at least 4-5 calls a week for quotes from people eho found me on line looking for local sign makers ie they search for "Sign Makers Mytowm"
Thats works well for me
