  • where to pre book cheap rail tickets?

    hey guys,

Last night at my rugby club I managed to pick up a couple of tickets for the Wales v England Rugby at the Millenium on Aug 13th, brilliant but….

… trying to find sensible priced rail tickets is mental. we’re going down for a weeks holiday the following weekend so this needs to be a cheap day out (relatively speaking), so far using thetrainline.com, the best i’ve got is £71 each 😮 for that money i can take tha van and P&R, I don’t want to though, I want to have a drink or three (for once!), I can even book our usual B&B and take the van, park just 3 min walk from the stadium (see it from B&B) and still have change from £142, but i need to be home early sun am and don’t want the hassle!

a friend of a guy i know is going from london to cardiff and has booked 5 separate tickets in order to save himself £50, why can I not just book a sensible priced ticket?

any ideas where to look please? i thought booking in advance was supposed to be cheaper (hot)

Have you been to your station and asked the at the enquiries office?

I use redspottedhanky.com instead of trainline.com since they don’t have any credit card charges or booking fee.

thank Ivan, i’ll have a look. not heard of them before.

I had a response from one of the websites, they explained that as much as half the seats for any given journey are offered discounted in advance, once those seats are gone, they’re gone. then the remainder are full price. because it’s Wales v England, there’s gonna be a lot of English fans, and English Welsh fans! travelling down on those early trains, hence the lack of cheap tickets available.

someone has suggested looking to go via portsmouth, it’s a bit of a mess about but if it’s quick enough and cheap enough….!

i use trainline.com, have the app on my phone too because i often use trains to move about the country. find it much more convenient with long journeys.
the app allows you to book via stored card details on your account and also stores all your booking info should you need it.

I have that and it is handy, even if for only planning routes! trouble is, i rarely know more than a few weeks ahead of doing something so rarely ever get better deals than I can on the platform.
