Useful smart phone / ipad Apps
Posted by Warren Beard on 21 July 2011 at 18:22As I’ve been looking at an ipad for a while and keep failing to justify one as I have an iphone (and a pad and pen 😉 ) Thought a thread on useful apps would be a good resource for one and all and maybe give a few ideas how it can help in day to day business.
Cheers
Warren

I suggest an app called "handy level" (which is a spirit level that can be used on the iphone/ipod/ipad).
Useful for when you’re out fitting and have forgotten to bring a spirit level with you.
-
‘my measures’ for site surveys, take picture and put measurement on screen
-
i use a iTouch for music at the gym only… :lol1: so cant advise on best apps…
family all have the phones and pad but nothing relevant.
i could be wrong, but is there not a pantone app that you can scan colours to get panton reference from? im sure i heard something along those lines… thought it was a great idea!as Phill says, the spirit level one….
John childs shown me one last year when out for a meal and it was a magnifying glass app! there was small print on my menu i couldnt read and he handed me his iphone and said, "you have eyes like me mate, try this" :lol1: :lol1: worked a treat, hovered the text and the screen magnified it
ok bit gimmicy but still… 😀

quote Noel Kearney:‘my measures’ for site surveys, take picture and put measurement on screen
the best survey app there is, especially when taking details of awkward places
-
I was looking for My measures the other day, just checked again but can only find the lite version – no good for a survery!
do you have to get the lite and then upgrade?
-
Dropbox – used via the website you can take pics for a survey, go to share via dropbox and by the time your back at the office they are on your pc – use it all the time.
I use on android but I’m sure it will be just as good on iphone

Unit converter on Blackberry.
Great for converting ft to mm etc.
Does all sorts of unit’s I’ve never heard of!

A few that get periodic use on my phone:
ScotTraffic – views from the traffic monitor cameras (the blue ones) – good to see what the traffic / weather is doing on a minute to minute basis (in Scotland)
TV Catchup – 3G or WI-FI live freeview TV…for downtime / teabreaks!
NAVFREE – a free sat-nav for i-phones if you don’t want to spring for tomtom
PCS – public contracts scotland (gov tender site)
VNC viewer – remote access your PC desktop from anywhere.
handy for viewing / altering files / emailing or just about anything really. -
HTC WM 6.5
only just still have itTwitter – Motweets, much better than the built in Peep that can fail as twitter evolves.
Point ur browser at m.facebook.com or touch.facebook.com for facebook
CoPilot – SatNav is good not perfect
Google maps 🙂
Marketplace is shutting down soon too!!!
Not the greatest of phones, but there u go

anybody have anything else that they have found? Looking to spoil myself this Christmas.
I was playing with an app in the apple store which you could write freehand, you can also get a stylus pen so you could write like normal directly on the screen, I want to find out if you can upload a picture (proof) and write over the top for when you sit down with a client and can scribble notes on to the ipad directly.
I’m looking to replace carrying a camera and a pad and pen with me all the time.
Cheers

Have to say i love my Google Chrome book warren.
sinqs with everything i have, bookmarks, browser settings, email account (google business) and so on. from opening the lid you are connected to the net by 3G in 10 seconds flat. its small and has upto 8hrs battery life so you dont even have to take the battery charger with you. it has bags of power. everything i do is remote, so suits me to a tea.
i hate mouse pads too, but theirs is a combination of a sort of iphone touches and the old pad settings. no buttons to press either which is good.did you ever move to google apps / business then? i remember you were looking into it.

new chromebook coming out I think, just been released in the states, may be worth holding on
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/ … books.html
I’m planning on the new kindle fire when it’s released here, first real android tablet that is going to stick around I reckon. Getting released in the US @ $199 so that would make it £130 – can’t be bad!

had a quick look, but i see no real difference other than some very small cosmetic changes to chrome homepage. which in my opinion is done more to promote googles apps. these same functions are already there, they just aren’t so blatant.
as for the new "look" black case, that’s only available in the wifi version of acer, the cheaper of the two chromebooks. which in my veiw beats the purpose of this excellent notebook/laptop.
I like that theres no dongle on a chrome book either, the sim is permanently hidden inside the notebook. you simply lift the lid and it boots up.
Warren, if you have your google business account and enjoy it mate, this really does intigrate things at another level.
my work office chrome browser is sinq’d with my home chrome browser and my chromebook. if i change a setting, create a bookmark or whatever. then go home, the same has been applied real time to my other computers.as you know, all the document vewiers, file storage and so on all makes hassl e free opening of emails, but keeps everything on the cloud too. so no ropey software clogging up notebook space etc etc
-
I’ve not really looked at the spec differences to be honest, just read the post saying a new version was out. At the current price it’s not something I’m planning but I do like the idea
-
Gavin, it appears that there isnt a new chrome book upgrade.
I have never been "logged out" of my chrome book, but was yesterday, and it appears that these new cosmetic updates are already in place on my currant chrome book. so the new login screen for instance is only visible if logged out, which i never am. so i can now see… in a nutshell, all google has done is update their chromebook browsers the same as firefox, IE etc do regularly. so there isnt actually a new chromebook available, other than the cheaper acer model now having the option of a black cover.
