Suitable printer for self adhesive vinyl..
Posted by Steve Rich on 9 July 2011 at 16:04I am looking to start a small business creating car window stickers but am in need of a good printer at an affordable price to do so…
What would be the best print technology for this..?
Ink-jet, laser?
Or I have heard that thermal transfer / die cutting are the best techniques.. does anyone know any of these that are sold in the UK?
Any help is appreciated!Chris Wool replied 14 years, 3 months ago 8 Members · 10 Replies -

that white dog is quite hard to do….
1: Could be printed ink onto sticker, but i dont see an outline of a clear sticker, would take a long time to print
2: The is indeed white vinyl sticker applied to the outside of the vehicle, but it has incredible detail, which can take a very long while to "weed"
I can see it is applied on top as u dont see the heating elements, a lot of window stickers are applied on the inside of the car.

thermal reversed print to clear.

The Gerber Edge still has its uses and fills a gap 😀
You can get one here: http://www.spandex.com/UK/Equipment/Pri … ge_FX.aspx

As has been said many times on here.
You will need to be either churning out high volumes to make it pay. At £3.99 each, how many will you need to sell to make it worth while?
Like most on here we don’t just run the same jobs.
I print stickers, banners, canvas, posters, signs, the machine needs to be running as much as possible for it to pay. Coupled with the fact that if it’s stood still it’s costing money. Cleaning cycles using up ink. Blocked print heads etc.
Even getting big orders for retailers. They’ll expect them much cheaper.
Just my opinion. I wouldn’t be happy trying to run a business selling to a limited market.

Any help is appreciated!Have you done any research at all?
I don’t think this would make for a viable business. All of us on here have more than enough in the way of kit to produce these, and why don’t we? Because it doesn’t work.
Do you think you’ve hit on an overnight get rich quick idea?
Please don’t take this the wrong way I’m only being realistic.
I first went self employed as a traditional signpainter when computer produced signs were in their real infancy 25 years ago. It took me at least 2 years cold calling and hard slog to build up a customer base to make my business viable. I still have some of those customers today, it takes time and I make a living. Most of all though I love what I do and the diversity that comes with it.
Do some more research, then I think you can make the right decision.
Hope this helps. -
quote Ian Pople:£3.99 each not worth selling them.
it is if you sell hundreds a week,
but it does cost money to get into the market,
you would need to compete with the existing sellers, of this type of product,
buying the right equipment is paramount, Looks like its been done on an edge, so you would need to invest several thousand, even for a second hand machine and separate cutter.
no easy, or indeed cheaper way to do it, than existing methods, without spending more money than the people who do it already, if that makes sense.Peter
