  • Applying Vinyl Over Body Filler (BOG)

I know this should be painted over etc.

My question is for anyone who has applied vinyl over it did it hold up or fail?

Client approved this so it wasn’t some cow boy move on my parts and I voided the warranty. We will see if it holds up or not but wanted to see anyone elses experience.

No matter where it is Jason, it still shows thru the vinyl mate.

how it stays put is down to the type of filler, the location of where on the body it has been filles and how well it has been finished.

    so many variables there…

we do repair work and like you, told to apply over the filled panel. we do it and ive never had any come back. but these are completely flat GRP bodies with a tear thats been filled and buffed. the vinyl panel is then applied. the body filled patch maybe only 2ft by 2inch, but the panel bridging it is like 100inches by 50inches.

in a nutshell. you can see it when you stand at an angle, but as ive said, ive never had any fail. but please keep in mind, there are smoother less porous fillers out there, that, coupled with the location filled will play a big part in how well it performs.

i dont think it would do any harm to prep the area fist and maybe even put some 3M promoter on it to help aid the adhesion.

I think you would have to make sure it was really dry and set to avoid bubbles from outgassing.
This is merely speculation on my part, though.

    Cheers guys,

The repair job you can’t see through the wrap. It was finished smooth and cleaned properly. I don’t know what was exactly used but when we went over it with iso prop nothing was really coming up onto our rags. Maybe it was painted I am not entirely sure.

Will report back if some of it fails.

ahhh, if it was painted properly also, ide imagine it totally fine Jason.
i thought you meant vinyl applied to bare filler.
if its been filled, finished, primed, sanded, painted etc etc out gassed then applied vinyl you should be 100% fine. at end of the day, your wrap can only adhere to the surface its applied to. if that’s crap, the wrap has no chance.
if yours fails and has paint on the rear of the vinyl then its not your problem, bar the painters. but you will more than probably have the finger pointed at you initially. comes with the territory of sign making/graphics fitting. we are end of the line of many. 😀
