What material to make a stand off sign out of
Posted by Denise Goodfellow on 21 June 2011 at 19:31Hi everyone. 🙂
We are in the process of making a tray/sign. Tray bought from Ashbys, Vinyl applied.
But the customer requires a 3D shaped tray with a digital printed logo applied, fixed to the tray also.
The shape is of a monkey, which is too complex to make according to ashbys.
We can just cut it out of diabond, but its still not 3D enough, the customer would like approx 50mm return.
Anyone got any suggestions.

Mount it onto 2" Signfoam/Signroc very easy to cut out. Or even a close cell polystyrene.

an option would be to cnc router or jigsaw and file it from 19mm foamex.
it has a nice gloss face. but the sides although very dense, have a porous matt finish. it also only comes in white, and has a good weight too it.
i have used this in the past when i had similar request for small letters to be done 3D. too small for built-ups so i routered in 19mm foamex.another option would be HDU eurothene board. this comes in various thicknesses. lightweight, very easy cut etc etc but once done, needs primed and finished (by the book) to get a gloss finish front and sides. its not cheap, but as i said, comes in various thicknesses and sheet sizes, unlike the foamex.

maybe sign foam would do the job, but if the face is flat then why not just stand offs?
you wont get a proper 3d effect with just returns or thick material, the customer may be asking to much?Peter

I think Denise means a 3D built-up peter, then the monkey print fitted on the face, which is pretty common and does give dimension of sort. as opposed to an actual 3D sculptured monkey.
either way, if sculpting the monkey to give some form of true dimension then the HDU would do the job perfectly anyway. I have used it on various jobs.
I have a sign i see now and again that i did for the company that makes Macintosh Coats, i did it about 10-12 years ago now and the HDU looks perfect to this day.it still amazes me why HDU didnt take off way back then. only now do we see it in dribs and drabs…

not disagreeing Rob, foam is a good way of doing the job,
I think hdu is the same stuff used in insulation panels, and comes in 50mm thick sheets from builders suppliers.Peter

no, "my take on it" is its completely different peter.
im sure these things are maybe all made pretty much the same, maybe even similar material with some versions of it, but i was working with insulation board last week would you believe. 2.5" thick, with the silver foil on both sides. much much lighter and easier to break than the likes of HDU for signage. i would imagine various different charactoristics too…
also, even the HDU i used 11 years ago (signfoam 2) has come along way since then. its almost like chalk with the high density stuff. i guess that’s why some versions are called SignRoc. -

TBH they did quote after telling me they could only do it a certain way, but failing to explain in a way I could understand.
BUILT UP LOGO (As chimp outline.ai)
Fabricated in: Descaled stainless steel
Powder Coated to WHITE (face) and BLACK (returns)
Size: 834mm x 808mm
Return depth: 45mm
C/W Half bracket fixings
C/W Paper templateTotal £411 + VAT
That is approx £80 short of the tray we got from them (8.2m long)
I will try the other company tomorrow, thank you

quote Peter Normington:Rob, i know sign roc and the like are very dense, but if working to a budget, and for smaller stuff maybe mdu could be an option?
anyway Lynn made a monkey out of me recently!Peter
Where would I get signroc or mdu from?
How would I cut it?
We are working on a buget, its for the young lad that’s renting our old shop. We are letting him pay monthly for the sign, which is at cost. ( he mends our computers etc.)

PeterBased on what you have said Peter, I had a look at the insulation stuff today as i still have some at the workshop.
you definately couldnt use it, even as a cheap alternative. rigid and thick it is, but you can easyily push your finger in onse side and out the other. that just wouldnt happen with SignFoam – HDU. even rubbing your thumb along the surface indents it and begins to crumble.
Denise, I bought my SignFoam 2 from cherwell sign supplies about 11 years ago. im sure it was them, but they stopped stocking it. I actually did a sign only 2 weeks ago using SignFoam 2, but used an old sheet i had in stock.
I read a supplier in the uk has began stocking it again. I could be wrong but i think it was All Print Supplies. ill have a think and come back to you on it…
again from memory, did Spandex not sell SignRoc for a spell in the UK some years ago?
