  • Work Bench Top – what material?

Posted by Dan Piddington on 3 May 2011 at 09:21

Hi all, hope you enjoyed the weekend,

I spent most of it building a 4000mm x 1400mm new work bench!

I’ve got 18mm mdf on top at present so now need to add a suitable
sheet material to cut on. In the past I’ve used foamex or similar but
I’m now thinking perspex would be a better long term option.

Not really had any experience with cutting mats, any good?

Open to suggestions, any help would be much appreciated.

Thought I saw a recent post on this but can’t locate it?

    Thanks, Dan

    Thanks Dave,

I’ll have a read over lunch.

Thanks Jason, glass would be great but I’m really looking
for a cheaper option, at present.

I use toughened glass too, just protect the edges!

Long term it isn’t expensive, I’ve got s 12′ x 3′ bench, cost about £120, had it 5 yrs and only replaced one panel cos I chipped a corner and blew the whole panel!!

    £120 over 5 yrs is what? £2 a month?

    Thanks Hugh,

True, if its gonna last then its worth the initial outlay.
I’ll shop around for some prices.

    More suggestions most welcome.

    Thanks

We got ours from Betaquip – 5mm thick with 1" grid underlay which helps square up cuts some time as 5mm sheet is quite translucent. Phone number was 01280 843082 but a quick search of web doesnt show any site so cant be sure they are still going.

just found this link to a supplier

:lol1: Chris, I have an 8 x 4 sheet (2 actually, as from a patio door Geoff removed. he cleaned off the stuff holding the sheets apart, Bobs your uncle, free work top!)
Now it is 4 years old and scratched I need to turn it over……..actually, think I will just work at the other side of the bench, still unused, that will give me another 4 years!

As for blades, I use an Olfa knife, 30 degree blades, the snap-off type, which come in packs of 10, still only on 2nd or 3rd pack, really not worth worrying about.

Funny you should say that Lorraine, I had glass tops in my old unit which I had bought and wanted glass in the unit I’m in now but cost was a bit of an issue. Got a glazing company in the unit next door so just waited for then to do a job with a suitable sized window and used the old unit they took out.
You can’t use just any unit though as not all the glass is toughened but patio door glass is because it’s low level.
