Views & Opinions of the need for www. on a sign?
Hi All,
Quick question. Is it strictly necessary to put the ‘www’ before a website adress on a sign? Since we are not to use ‘tel’ in front of a phone number…. I was just wondering….

(I am doing a sign for a house that is for sale and readability when driving past is very important…. so I thought the less info the better?!?!) -

I think everyone recognises it’s a web address when it has the .com or .ie on the end. I have seen a lot of ads now without www.

Can depend on how the address read… some folk can and do get cnfused by an email and a web address next to each other. or mistake one for the other…

I did this today, there wasn’t much room for the long address and didn’t want it too close to the name so left off the "www"
Like most things I find, "if it looks right then it is right" 😉

depends on the client taste…
we have not put it on some of our clients stuff

no need at all for www.
total waste of materials and space.
it does not need to be entered into any browser,
the .co.com or whatever tells everyone it is a web address.
in fact in practice, I don’t think it is even necessary to put a web address on any material nowadays, a google for the company will find it quickly, so web addresses in general are no longer needed, on vans and other advertising media, probably even phone numbers could be done away with before long?
Hardly ever see a web address or phone numbers on national/worldwide company vans, we all just type in "post office" Virgin" or "TNT" far quicker than having to remember a web address.
In a one off situation, like a web address for a house sale, then Housesale.com (or whatever)
would be the best and most memorable for passers byPeter

maybe I have had too much wine in me tonight to reply properly here peter, so excuse if i rabble on :lol1:
but that’s pretty naive comments there mate… I do "personally" agree with you on "some" grounds, but i think why i am agreeing on "some" is because we are regular internet users, work in the same line of business and so on…
but reality is, ALLOT of folk, even those using the net on a daily basis do NOT grasp it all just yet.To say we recognise a name and google it and find it just as, if not easier. is silly. do you have any idea how many duplicate company names there are on the net???? 🙄
The whole point in .co.uk – .com. .eu etc which with every domain name extension added costs hundreds of millions to implement into the WWW. is due to "Confusion". it is to narrow down net searches. to index properly and more… all well in advance of this wild animal we know as the internet, turning into a monster. and that is where it is heading…

agreed, and extension such as .com or .co.uk tells us its no brainer web address. but as i said, thats maybe to you and me!my list of letters, then detials was to try show how a cluster of info can be confusing…
look at the following i listed now, "without" I.D. letters etc and can be, and often is, typical legals on a vehicle.
* do you want to call a high charge MOBILE number… which is which?
* do you want to fax or call? which is which?
* should we drop area code because you dont need business from the * surrounding towns?

The whole point in why Telephone: was dropped to TEL: was to shorten, simplify reading "at a glance".
"Tel:" was then shortened to "T:"
fine for a bit, but then comes along Mr Fax, Mr Email, Mr Isdn, Mr Skype, Mr world wide web… the list goes on.as i say… i AGREE… to an extent, but…

i still think u need to co.uk etc , a clear example of this is we are not the only "The Sign Shop" in Devon. See front page, that is not us but they are in Devon.
auto googling to website is common, a lot of our website hits say that
if u are going to shorten a website by removing the www. it is best to check it first as DNS entries can be written for it not to work.

I don’t understand how the .com or .co.uk signifies that it is a website address
My email account is with sky so it ends in sky.com….I would say the only thing that seperates the two without the www would be that the email address has an @ in it 😕

if every vehicle had same formatting, then it would look bad.
Glenn u mention Sky email address, well fair enough but anyone who runs a website should really use a "business" domain associated with it. This can give better security for domain names as they should be registered to you and allow you to move between internet providers without hassles.
I once had a domain that was very long on side of a vehicle… we binned it as it looked bad.
But formatting should be done the way it look best with the rest of the layout

I always put www although I don’t think it is strictly necessary, I would also always put it on a vehicle and I think nowadays a web address is also more important than a telephone number and in my opinion more important than a fax which seems almost redundant. I can’t remember the last time I received a fax let alone sent one.

I don’t routinely do the w w w.
I only put on one phone number as well, and putting a fax number on a vehicle (and a sign too) is ridiculous.
But if a client insists I’ll add the w w w.
