I need to apply 2 pieces of silver etch to windows 2400 x 914mm.
The vinyl will have logos stencilled out of it so will need application tape.
Here’s the problem; I only have up to 760mm app tape and I know that overlapping tape can produce air pockets along the overlapped ridge when fitted.
Will I have to buy a 1220mm roll of app tape or has someone got a brilliant suggestion how to get round this?

I would buy the roll of tape.
Better to spend money on something you may never need than to waste money, time, and materials trying to jerry rig something.

you can get away with is but not always, what I do is put a strip of tape on the outer edge first so the large middle piece is on top of the smaller side strip, this way you can smoothly squeegee over the join in tape, make sure your tape is nice and clean on the edges too, I keep mine on a shelf and over time the edges get dirty and built up a bit of dirt (on odd size rolls etc, full rolls get used up too quickly)

But the best way is to use full sheet of tape, get a larger roll cut down and then you have a few odd sizes, they last a long time but there when you need it.

    rather safe than sorry

    cheers

Are the logos pretty basic or intricate Peter?

I’ve never done this on frosted vinyl before but we always butt join the application tape rather than overlapping it…..it’s always worked for us

Are the graphics wider than 760mm, quite often with frosted vinyl you only need to apply the application tape where the graphics are and not over the complete vinyl edge to edge, end to end

Logos are mainly textual and wider than 760mm. These are going right at the front of an exhibition stand in close view.
Although I’ve overlapped before I think I will go with Jill & Warren and get a full width roll.
    Thanks all.

I regularly fit with overlaps and I always fit cut stuff with fresh clean water and unweeded except for perhaps the fist and last letter for easy alighnment

I spray a fine mist on the widow and apply the vinyl and once squeegeed properly you can remove the application tape straight away.
Any small bubbles if any can be gently squeegeed out, I usually spray the vinyl with another mist of water to ease the removal.

I know everyone has their own methods but this works for me,

Oh, never thought about leaving it unweeded. Is this the favourite method?
Turns out this will be going on to perspex not glass. Will it weed off the perspex OK?

Peter Perspex is more hi tac and scratches very easily but done carefully can’t see a problem.

I always weed once applied on window, find it much earsier

Peter, weeding after applying is something that some people do, wouldn’t say it was the preferred method by most but it does work well for some.

As for applying to perspex and them weeding, I would try a test yourself before you did the job, acrylic can be scratched quite easily so it’s not something I would want to try myself.

Thanks guys, I think I will play safe and buy a full width app tape plus weed first.
I’m always telling my customers that they get a quality job so I’d better stick to my word.

    Probably best Peter.

btw, forgot to say…I only weed on the window if applied with water, If applied dry you must always weed prior to fitting.
