    Hi all,

I have a customer who wants me to do a job for him as the previous signmaker didn’t do a great job. who ever did the sign, didn’t fix the letters properly so they started falling off as you can see in the pic.

I have spoke to the customer and stated that it will all need to be done again to be safe and from future problems.

i have taken a picture of the sign and measurements to work out the size. what would be the best way to put the new letters on??

I’ve been thinking of taking off all the old letters and the broken fixings (the ones that come with the letters) and then add new fixings seperatley and using something like pinkgrip to apply the new letters.

just wondering if this is okay to do.

also forgot to mention the i wont be able to use the current letters as the customer has stated that some of the current letters have gone missing

    thanx

if those are foamex letters and in reach of vandals. they can still pull letters off like that even when fixed properly!

foam pvc or acrylic should be adhered to the male locator using something like Tensol. this actually melts both surfaces into one another whilst creating a hard resin around the fixing.
however, a vandal jumping up and grabbing it can still manage pull it away or break the letter off.

better, but more expensive is a metal letter soldered to a brass locator fixing and screwed to the wall.

    or same but threaded rods.

i could be wrong, but doubt the customer will want to replace the whole sign rather than a few letters?

easy, keep happy and cheap route.
match the font and size. re-fit using same method.

if he is willing to pay. do the lot, but using one of the other methods above.

or… remove all the letters in reach and replace in vinyl?

sorry, very difficult to give best advice without knowing the exact details and environment the sign is in.

    Thanx for the reply Rob,

The letters came off due to the method of how it was stuck. The letters are made from composite board i think. also its quite high and out of reach from vandals. I could i guess get a letter off and match it but will have to make sure its exact. the thing is everything will have to come off anyway as it hasnt been stuck properly so is a matter of time for some of the letters as they will sooner or later come off.

    have took a closer look…

is that little patches of self adhesive tape on those locators?

the letters that have come off, have they been scored on the rear to help adhesion?

thats what i thought but havnt taken a closer look. i dont usually do work like this as i mainly specialise in printing but always thought a strong adhesive such as pink grip should be used.
