  • ‘Good Signage Standards’ …. Ever heard of this ?

    Good afternoon everyone.

We’ve been backwards and forwards with a client over proposal for some new external retail park signage. They really like our latest designs, but they have a couple of queries.

One of the queries they have is : Is the design of the sign in ‘accordance with the Good Signage Standards’ in terms of height and width ratios ?

In the 16+ years i’ve been in signmaking, with probably a good 10 years as a designer i’ve never heard of this ? I’ve done a quick ‘Google’ search and not found anything. I’ve also asked a guy who works in the office who’s been in Signmaking for a lot longer than me and he’s never heard of this either. Surely it’s just down to good design rather than having a ‘set standard’ when looking at the aesthetics ??

Is there a set standard that anyone on here knows about ??

never heard of it – tried google and nothing specific comes up – challenge the client to refer to the article/legislation whatever

Never heard of it either, the only thing I know of is " The Sign Design Guide" but this is aimed at producing signs for the visually impaired or "Inclusive signage" as the JMU call it.

Crickey !! Think I understood some of it. Thanks for the link.

Glad i’m not the only one then that’s not heard anything about this. Think i’ll go back to the client and see what they are trying to ‘get at’. They really like the design, so really that should be it. That’s the only problem when you get a ‘comittee’ of people with a share in the ‘say’ of what the sign looks like.

If I do find anything about it, or they can point me in the direction of these ‘standards’ i’ll post them on here.

    quote Martin:

I suspect the guide that Martin is referring to is what they mean – if you google "Sign Design Guide" you should get the information you need

    Hi Adrian

There is a Sign Design Society that offer guidance/best practice – your customer may be referring to their guidelines and advice
