A Real Monster
Posted by Rick Ledenican on 22 December 2010 at 14:45Hello All,
This truck was in made for only two years. International sold a handful of them and one ended up in our shop. It truly was a pain to wrap, taking 20% more material and labor than was estimated. One big "Rolling Out" Party when she was done.

looks like you took on quite a handful there, bet you were glad to see it finished!

Over on labor, over on materials, under on bid, we did make a little but it is one of seven vehicles to be done, The rest are Box – thank God – Trucks.
PS The very next project was a 40′ full covered transit bus. It was a cake walk compared to the Purple Monster – which by the way had a base color of bright red and the customer didn’t want any showing, including inside the doors. very limited warranty.

you know what Chris, I was tihnking that it should be but, i’ve been out of the yank / drag scene for about 5yrs now, can’t even recall when i last went to the strip, prob in the cuda in 05. strange how something which ruled my life 24/7 has little affect now…. actually, that’s not true… the sound if a big block mopar V8 still turns me on like no other motor!!

i like boxes though, i can wrap them all day long!

That car sounds sweet, you have it wrapped. Love the old engines, I have twin hemis in my boat with warner trannys. 16 ton 1965 steel clippe5 44 feet. gets 2-3 gallons per mile at 3200 rpm. It’s worth every drop of gas to hear those engines run full bore in perfect time

now you’re talking! that boat sounds awesome… twin hemi’s!!! 392 or 426ci’s? would love to see that on the go! maybe i’ve not lost as much interest in the old mopar stuff as i thought!! Jeff (ex-pat in Canada) on here is also a mopar man.
i never reached the heights of a hemi, the tuned 440 ran 10’s without gas so that was fine, 3mpg on the road, floor it and it was 1mpg or worse! i never wrapped that car, could never have covered that panther pink paintwork! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONq2cBG7CXA
the car went to iceland and now hads a blown KB (i think) hemi in it.
i’m not really into wrapping, i don’t spend enough time doing ‘just vehicles’ to get proficient enough at it to offer it as a service. I do few easy panels now and then, and sometimes large areas of vinyl into recesses etc but try to avoid the serious curves… i’m much better at other stuff!

Ok now I’m jealous, I love the whole American idea of lets make it how it should be, put a big engine in and have something special.
What do we get in this country, a Mitsubishi L200 prone to cylinder head problems and a Nissan Nivara that averagely throws timing chains a 60k.
I have what is believed to be about the only road legal race frame sandrail in the UK, yet it’s just rubbish compared to what you guys go down the shops with.
Sorry that all has no relation to signmaking, but signmaking is boring compared with V8’s 😎

a what? i loke the word ‘road legal’, to me it suggests that although it probably is legal, as my cuda was, it probably should not be allowed on the road!

Need some monsters like that to get us outta the snow 😀
Most of the snow has thawed out in London thankfully

You are of course right with that statement Hugh, but it has a V5, stating exactly what it is, and it’s T&T.
It was first built in 87, and used for SCORR racing, fortunately the guy had the foresight to register it. But if your saying should a spaceframe with a 131 Mirafiorri engine hanging out the back be allowed on the road, shouldn’t really.
I love alternative cars, but I also love American, I would really love a proper blown hotrod, but there just not in this country, or they’re unaffordable.
We’ve had Oldsmobile, Camero, Corvette and Mach1, never had one, but always liked the AMC Gremlin. Oh and a CJ5. That V8 sound can’t be beaten, even the M3 sounds sad up against it.

my cuda was all proper legal, mot, treaded rear tyres (15" x15" rims!), V5 etc, took a fair bit of work to make it road legal and get a proper mot on it, was a handful on the road to be fair, skinny tyres up front, huge tyres on the back with inboard 4link suspension, no diff (lhad a spool / fully locked) in the axle and 600hp straining it’s nuts off to be let loose all the time, no windy down windows, no heaters / blowers, no carpets etc, just a bare bones race car forced through an MOT, great fun though!
have had cuda’s, B’cuda’s, challenger, duster, darts, and a few others. nearly all mopar bar the 74 camare with a corvette LT1 motor in it, got that when i was 18!
re the rods, there’s loads in the UK, have a gander through custom car magazine, cheaper than buying in the US in most cases.
i’ll have a look into the scorr racing when i get five mins, haven’t heard of it before.

I have a glance through ebay now and again at them, but I mustn’t start a serious search, because I’m only going to finish up buying one. I only really keep the buggy now because our kids love it.
There was a General Lee on ebay a week or so ago, I was starting to be able to actually justify needing it.
It’s the sound and the raw power, turbos, multi-valves etc are ok, but a V8 with a Holley is unbeatable.
Damn, I just done a Youtube search and shouldn’t of! I’m now doing a web search to find something. You’re only young once, and even though I no longer am, I’ll pretend.

i’ll have to see if I can dig out the pics of my mates cars, He had a general lee and a rosco cop car, if we went to shows i’d often take the cop car and follw him in the Lee, far too much fun, both cars had all the correct livery, horns, lights, sirens and pa, we added a few soundbites to the pa too, like rosco’s gyoo gyoo gyoo catchphrase and the popey ice cream tune, like i say, far too much fun! I took the kids down to Wales in it for a weeks holiday one year too, over 1000 miles and £350 worth of fuel later, we were back home and still trying to wipe the smiles off our faces. He’s sold them both now unfortunately -bird, house, mortgage etc-, shoulda kept the cars!

the engines are 426’s with old original carter spring choke heat activated. The files with photos of the boat are on the computers at work, will send soon. Hope the snows and cold are letting up some there.

Full wraps can definately be a pain at times.
