  • Need help contour cutting solvent prints with Roland GX24?

Posted by Josephf on 17 December 2010 at 01:37

    Hi there,

I am using Jetbest Inks and my prints are being laminated. The sizes may vary but are around 1 metre x 2 foot.

I have tried to contour cut the laminate sheets with my Roland GX 24 and have had no success. The issue I am having is for the registration marks to be recognized.

I am creating my files in Illustrator, saving as an eps, ripping with colour choice then feeding the file via Illustrator into Cut Studio.

Is anyone using a Roland GX24 for this purpose eg contour cutting laminated stickers not using Roland inks.

When I spoke with support they told me it may have something to do with the viscosity of the inks but it sure looks black to me.

I have found this disclaimer in the Roland GX 24 product page "Depending on the ink (black) employed by the printer used, correct sensing may not be possible."

I have also read online somewhere the cutting feature of a Roland CJ500 stopped working once the printer was converted to eco solvent inks.

If you can help with a solution I would appreciate it.
    Thank You

    Joe

Thanks Tim this is what I have gathered.

Are you using another cutter to contour cut and if so what brand?

    Thanks for replying.

Versacamm and Gerber Edge, both printers and cutter set-ups

Ok no worries at this point I prefer a print only machine since most work is laminated hence the print needs to be removed, laminated and then cut.

I am thinking about the Gerber Edge I think that would be a good little printer for stuff that needs to be done ASAP and sent out after its finished printing.

    Thanks Again

some laminates do give bother satin is one so worth trying it with out laminating to prove the system.
or remove the laminate just where the marks are.

Hi Chris thanks for your reply.

I tried doing this without laminate, I tried it with laminate and I tried it with matt laminate applied on the crop circles and still no success.

If anyone else can help or confirm one way or another please post your replies.

    Thank You

    Joe,

Have you tried creating the reg marks in illustrator and assigning a c100 m 100 y100 k100 colour to them to achieve a denser colour?

When they are printed by the printer itself they are generated as c0 m0 y0 k100, which might make them a little pale for the plotter to read.

Also, have you tried calibrating the cutter to read a paler reg mark? Not too sure on the GX24, but most opos plotters have a calibration function built in somewhere in their settings.

    Regards,
    George

    Hi George,

Just tried that still same issue. I changed the CYMK on the reg marks and that has not helped.

As far as I am aware you can not adjust the color.

    Thanks for your help anyone.

    No worries.

Have you tried to cut the reg mark circles (assuming they are circles) out of gloss black vinyl, weeding them, and getting the plotter to read them? Does that work ok? If it doesn’t it means the plotter is not functioning correctly (does the sensor maybe need cleaning?).

If so, maybe try printing the reg marks, cut some black circles exactly the same size and overlaying them onto top of the printed circles.

Failing that my only other suggestion would be a sledgehammer – I’ve done that in the past, the job still doesn’t get done and you’re now completely without a plotter but it does feel good for a while at least.

    Regards,
    George

    HI George,

    I think I have found a solution.

The problem I believe is the gloss in the ink.

I tried out your solution George using matt instead and that worked.

I did 2 test prints and both worked no worries.

I am going to do more tests though and see if I can contour cut 6 different prints in a row. The only headache is that I will need to pre cut a heap of reg mark out of vinyl and apply them before I contour cut.

I did attempt to find this solution using a matt laminate which did not work so it must be the viscosity in the inks and the gloss levels.

Thank you all that have posted and offered solutions.

You can get matt sellotape and apply it over the registration marks, that helps. I sometimes do it when my Grenadier has problems finding the marks.

Hi Peter I did a test with matt laminate and that did not work.

The matt black vinyl did the trick though no worries.

    Thank you for replying.

Just to confirm this issue has now been resolved from my end and I now can contour cut using a Roland GX 24 with solvent prints.

    The Gx 24 is awesome.

    Thanks
