Cuts getting deeper with sp300i
Posted by Mo Gillis-Coates on 26 October 2010 at 15:55I’m not quite sure what’s happening but I having to set my cut pressure harder and harder when cutting my laminated md5 I started out at 120 but now i’m up to almost 170 and still the images arnt weeding properly.
I have hardly used the blade that’s in, it’s only been in for about 3 months and it’s not running every day….
just a new blade or am I doing something wrong?
cheers

I have the same problem, even tried a few new blades but contour cutting laminated prints have been a real pain since getting my machine, I just presumed it was me so never mentioned anything but now am happy to hear others thoughts to Mo’s question.
cheers

Think I might give the guys at Roland Support a quick email

Hi All
Right first of all check to see if the blade has not clipped the first guide foot as this will instantly blunt the blade (you can tell if there is a fine scratch in the metal foot. If it has remove the guide, clean and cover in small section of white vinyl ( this will be your tell tale if it does it again) Next remove the blade and set the machine to cut a series of 100 or so imaginary small ‘8’s as this will work the unit fully up and down to free up the mechanism of any dust. Insert a new bade and should hopefully be ok.
I cannot take any credit for this useful info it was given to me by Harry at Edward Mathias.
Best wishes

Try slowing the cutting speed down to 10cm I fine I get a better cut, Rich

New cutting strip required, nothing more sinister than that.

I’ll try slowing it down but brand new machine with brand new cutting strip 😕
also changed blades twice and still have same problem, Usually I have to cut with over 200 pressure on laminated stuff.

as the air temp has dropped a lot lately expect to add pressure.
most common problem i have is the first 2 thou or so of the blade has chipped off. causing what you describe
so rich is on the ball with slowing the cut speed down i cut at around 20 with a pressure around 160.
some people do a test cut (on a nice warm bed) then its not cut properly at the cold end of the vinyl.alex what the hell are you on about 😮

Hi Chris
Its apparently a common fault with Versacamms the blade clips the first foot plate closest to where the print head docks. If you remove the plate you can see fine scratches where the blade sometimes clips it. I was advised to do as described above by Harry at Edward Mathias and have not had a blunt/chipped blade since. The white vinyl shows the marks clearer and stops early wear of the blade.
Make sense?

ah sorry with you now.
should have only the correct amount of blade showing and that wont happen.
a lot of people have it sticking out to far 😉 -
Chris
Versacamm as different guides to the Pro II but should warn that they are in place when cutting or the VS640 does.
On my Soljet ProII I have a Smart knife installed cap removed cut through 80mic vinyl + 100mic Laminate at 140 pressure, speed 60cm and 100mic vinyl + 100mic Laminate at 160 pressure, speed 60cm. Still using same blade 4+ rolls in cutting smallest label of 100mm x 40mm to 300mm x 400mm and odd shape stuff in between. I am using a slim blade at .5 offset due to the 80 mic vinyl having a very thin backing.Kev

Hi Chris
I use Edward Mathias blades that are preset and you cannot deepen them. I am afraid this is a known problem with Versacamms. The pounce mechanism is very lazy and needs the up and down excersise to keep it moving freely. Hence the row of 100’s of ‘8s’ cutting without the blade in it keeps the up and down process moving freely. Also take a look at the foot of the first guide I bet you it has small scratches in it when you look.
Basically everything i mention here Harry talked me through on the phone he was 100% correct about my sp540 he really knows his machines and blades.

thanks kevin – alex
i presume you mean the media clamps that the blade hits .?

Hi Chris
Tha’ts the technical term for them…lol I have been trying to think of the name all night. But do have a look at them you might be surprised!

i will have a look but kevin knows i have a pro 11.
not to much of a problem as i spend about £16 a year on blades and my machine is quite well used. -
Sounds stupid but do you have enough blade showing in the first place? I had the same problem and found that just by exposing a little more blade when doing laminated material allowed me to reduce the pressure and get a nice clean weed. 😀

Not sure about your set up Mo but I can set the pressure in my rip or on my machine but the box has to be ticked in the rip to let it handle it otherwise even though I can alter the pressure still it won’t make any difference. I set the cut pressure on the printer panel.

I may have a look at that steve, still getting the same problem…. it’s driving me bomkers, i fixed it temprorarily with a new blade but back to the pressures again, I’ll have a look ad see if thats the prob
Cheers
by the way……. definitely no marks on my media clamps, how much do you owe me?
