  • help with applying app.tape using laminator

Posted by Phillip Patterson on 21 October 2010 at 16:11

    hi all,

I have alot of large graphics to apply application tape to, so thought i would use the laminator which i bought not long ago. the laminator is heavy and seems pretty reasonaable as in the pic but the usage instructions are rubbish and vague. I was hoping if i could get help on why it is creasing the graphics and app.tape when used through the laminator. I have the pics attached.

    thanks in advance.

I would say you need a bit of tension on the app tape, I cant see if the roller holding the tape has a brake, but doesnt look like it has. also you do need a bit of pressure on the rollers if the weeded vinyl has large areas of backing paper showing.
It may also help if the app tape is fed under the other steel roller (if it is a roller)before going on to the rubber one.
I recently did about 30 metres of 1220 on my laminator, without to much of a problem, it is a bit of a learning curve, but should be possible

clear tape is horrible to use anyway so first off it will be much easier with paper.

It also looks like you are using too much pressure and that’s why it’s "warping" I don’t think you need a brake or tension on the roll as long as it comes off smoothly (clear tape usually doesn’t though I found – again use paper tape) Paper tape creates it’s own tension due to being stuck to itself on the roll.

lastly make sure the roll of tape is secure on the bar and can not move, should have guides to tighten up against it to hold it in place. If the tape and graphic is lined up then it should run fine especially at 610mm wide.

2 weeks ago I put nearly 200m of cut vinyl through my laminator to tape up with not one crease or problem, not sure what I would have done without it really.

    keep trying

    cheers

the app tape itself has no backing warren. if i did put through the other bar peter wouldnt it stick to the bar as the sticky side is the exposed upper side??? Also I had the thought that because the app tape is stuck to itself on the roll and as it is getting realsed there is resistance there but not on the graphics. so would that mean the graphics is moving at a faster rate then that of the app.tape?? if so would this be the cause????

    thanx again guys!

You could try having some one pull tension on the application paper when it is through the machine before putting the vinyl through so it is tight and smooth, other thing is company I do a lot of work for run the vinyl through on a backing board of 3mm mdf. I would say stay away from the clear application paper I have never found it to make work any easier, every time I have used I have had problems.

Phillip you are correct about sticking to the bar, my laminator had the bar higher than the roller the material is loaded on so the non sticky side would feed over it, rather than under it, sorry If I mislead you

Hi Peter no problem at all. just out of curiosity i havnt used the laminator for laminating any actual graphics as of yet but when i do, would i get the same problems??? if so this is going to be a complete nightmare!!!!!!!!

or is is the fact that it is a thinner vinyl and will behave differently to the app.tape??

You will have the same problems applying an overlaminate, if you use a board under the graphics or the graphics have already been applied to a board then this might make things a bit easier as has already been suggested, can’t really say much more than that as my laminator has a different set up and the instructions are understandable.
