How to make slate house signs
Hi All!
I’m interested in what I would need to make Slate House Signs etc with either house numbers or house names on.
Equipment and supplies.

Speak to your local kitchen worktop manufacturer, its something they tend to have in stock. Make sure they put a bevel on the edges front and back as it can splinter/shatter if its not finished properly. Any decent mill engraving machine with tungsten carbide tipped cutters will work…. slate is nice stuff to work with, lovely and soft.
Infill with sign makers one shot. If you get any overspill go over with turps and a 3m fine sanding pad (the brillo pad type things) then use slate sealer to finish and give a nice sheen – you’ll get this from a fireplace centre as its used commonly on hearths and mantle pieces.

not sure if slate should be used for worktops,
would it not be to soft and unhygienic?

Thats where we used to get it from Peter, our supplier used to use it a fair bit… more for bathroom worktops and special fireplaces. Just a general stoneworking place…
I only say kitchen worktop place as they are likely to have the equipment to cut and finish properly. If you are serious enough they may want to get some slate from their suppliers.
