  • what to charge for etched out frosted window

Posted by Mo Gillis-Coates on 24 September 2010 at 08:40

Hi guys, I have to do a door window (top half) with frosted vinyl and cut into it would be the company logo and all the opening times etc for a hair salon.

I have no idea what to charge, would that be a flood coating? I’m guessing that I’m looking at 6sq ft of coverage so about 600mmx1000mm

I was thinking in the region of £75 supply and fit? am I close

    Cheers
    Mo

    I supply and fit window frost/etch at £35 / sq m.
    + £5 per pane
+ £10 order charge (covers my carriage if have to specially order material)
    + Travel time and Mileage

To cut and weed a design would depend on the complexity and difficulty of the design.
Simple Logo and opening times sounds like quite a lot of small letters so say around £40- 50.
+ any extra time on computer if any design time is needed to adjust logo.

    At the cheapest that’s £100 before mileage/travel at 45p /mile.

Thanks guys, this now looks like its one panel about A2 size (but 420mm x 800mm) but with lots of artwork in (basically its a hair salon opening times) they also want me to add some trade logos and I will have to redo their name as it’s a custom font made specifically for them and not a font found anywhere (only 4 letters EDEN) so that will require some time,

On the face of it I recon about £105 including fitting, seems a lot for what it is but they want quality and it needs to be fitted in reverse on the inside of the door

    Thanks again

thats because you know what its costing you to manufacture mate. they dont, nor do they know how long recreating the logo etc is going to take. you will then have to submit layouts/proofs for them to confirm. then go and fit it on site.

those extra logos etc are all going to make the window busy. glass etch really isnt about offering adverts and things in the design. i would try sway them away from the logos unless very basic. as you scale things down to fit and add logis, the intricasy is going to make weeding etch very difficult too.
if you are fitting it dry no so much a problem. but if you fit wet, all these little bits are going to become a nightmare.

fitting charge is just as important mate…

give them a ball park figure for the etch and the installation fee separate.
but i wouldnt lift a finger recreating artwork etc unless they say it sounds ok.

Bang on Rob, your right on the face of it, it looks small but the work is very delicate, all points taken on board, I always send a detailed quote with everything itemised, it’s a hair studio, if they question the price I will probably remind them that I didn’t question the price when my MRS paid them £125 for a haircut blow dry and colour….lol

Quote going to now be about £130

Cheers rob for the head readjustment

also worth bearing in mind that many etch vinyls are pigs to weed out, assuming you can see the cut lines -builders chalk if need be-. i do quite a few opening times for salons, they can take a fair amount of time.

dont, whatever you do, forget to reverse the image before cutting! i reckon for every three i cut right first time, there is at least one that starts cutting the right way around when not paying attention!
