  • How Important is it to seperate Data Cables (cat6) and Power

    1. We will be wiring the new workshop over the weekend and I am just wondering how important is it to separate the Data Cables from the power Cables using the Dado Trunking. It looks well but it is necessary and will any interference cause real problems

    2. There is a patch panel in the house and i am considering considering connecting that one to another in the workshop(type of junction box idea), this will allow me to pull the max cables trough the under ground duct not while it is easy to do so and leave the option of using them in time by just plugging into the second panel in the work shop when i need them. I just don’t know what the future will bring and want to keep the options options. Have i made any sense and will this work??

I am currently wiring up a unit, it is 80mtrs away from the main unit/server cabinet. We normally use gigabit networking and seems to be fine at present. I use CAT5e as CAT6 is no real benefit.

You are supposed to keep wiring away from data, think lightening/thunder storms but I have no doubt it will work next to power cables, we did run inside trunk in the past

I too have heard that running CAT6 has no real benefit over CAT5e. It’s been a few years since I’ve done any really significant networking (actually more than a decade now I come to think of it) but running data and mains cabling along side each other has always been a big NO NO for me. My suggestion would be to seperate them to be safe

Do it right, and do it once!

I’m more than happy to be proven wrong on this though.
