  • Recommended reliable 3rd party ink for Mimaki JV3

I do have a Mimaki JV3-160SP and I would like your help to decide wether I do or do not start using 3rd party inks on it.

Reading some forums I’ve found some mention to J-Star, which is point to be a reliable japonese 3rd party ink. But when I google for it, a chinese website seems to be the official manufacturer… Strange…

I have also found mentions to Triangle Inks, Lyson Inks, etc… But the question is, are they more agressive than original oem inks? Do they harm the printheads faster? Do they clog them a lot?

Well, I guess that only someone with some experience can tell me this. I expect no replies from ink manufacturers/suppliers, but only from end users, who work with the machines on a daily basis.

Reading FLAAR reports, I also found some mention to ATinks…

Please help me on this, since I expect to order ink for trial/tests soon.

Indeed, I’ve seen lots of good references pointing to techink.

But I’ve also noticed that techink has only solvent inks, so I guess odor may present a problem if ventilation is not enough. (comparing odor to original inks)

I also read mentions to lyson/nazcar inks as a good option.

    Anyone has tried them?

    Cheers!

Well I am using the SelectTech (see link above) Colorific Pro-JV3, there is a claim that the inks are a match to the original colours and that claim after my own tests is very accurate, there is a slight change in the colours but it was not significant.

The smell will surprise you at first, but you get over that after a week.

I have experience of many different 3rd party inks. We supply our own which I will not mention here as I am not trying to sell anything, just help answer your question.

Mimaki OEM SS2 ink is very good (apart from the obvious week magenta). But as a result is very expensive. No manufacturer will match the ink exactly because although, by law, any ink sold MUST detail what chemicals are in it, you only have to declare between x an x % of each part. You’d be very lucky to get any exact match.

There are many manufacturers out there and they are sold mainly in 2 different ways. The cheapest way to do it is to buy refillable cartridges and top them up with the 1 litre bottles that are supplied. The other way is to buy compatible cartridges. I have seen good and bad to be honest but I don’t want to start naming the ones I’ve had bad experience with, that wouldn’t be right. A customer of mine recently was using refillable inks by Inktec and he was very happy. They seemed good too. Another customer of mine is using Nazdar cartridges which he says are better than OEM!!?? Admittedly, they seemed very good but probably not as good as OEM in my opinion.

One thing to be careful of is profiling. These people who claim to have a much better magenta/red are telling the truth, but will your RIP and profiles already be compensating for that weakness? If so, you may end up with very red looking prints and need reprofiling. Which is fine but just be aware that it could happen.

So the 2 best I have seen lately (other than our own of course 😀 ) are Inktec for refillables and Nazdar for compatible carts.

I hope this is of use?

I’ve been using Jetbest full solvent for almost 3 years now with no problems whatsoever. Excellent value.
