  • Please can i get help with making a banner using vinyl?

Posted by Phillip Patterson on 6 September 2010 at 13:20

I have a 30 inch machine and would like to make a banner which measures 20footx5foot. obviously not possible printed. I have been thinking of buying plain white banner material and then using self adhesive banner vinyl to cut all the pieces seperately to make the banner.

Here are a few issues I would like to know,

Is it possible to obtain self adhesive banner vinyl
which you can print on to?? I can then just stick it on to the banner.

is banner vinyl okay with regards to layering? i.e stricking banner vinyl on top of each other.

the banner i want to make has detailed images and plain text.

any companies out there which specialise in the sale of this banner vinyl and banner material??

any general pro’s and cons with regards to printed banners and cut vinyl applied banners for a 20×5 foot banner?

    thanks you!!

not worth it to spend all that time on a banner when you can outsource it in one piece fully printed and free your time up to make some money elsewhere.

Outsource it if it’s too big to do, do it right first time or do it twice 😕

Warren’s dead right Phillip, just get a trade supplier to do the whole job, delivered to you printed, hemmed & eyeletted.

    Hi Phillip

If you look around at large out of town shopping centres they are covered in huge banners with multi layered vinyls……….carpet right …….Curry’s ………PC World etc…….. yes these are banners skins tensioned into Flex box systems so not "flapping in the wind" but I can also think of many many banners large and small that I have fitted digital and cut graphics to over the years which have worked successfully using standard day to day vinyl’s.

One very important point to mention is that when packing up to deliver to the customer make sure you roll the finished banner with the graphics out-over"

I’d just like to confirm that I had a conversation with a very helpful chap at Wm Smith who informed me similar to what Gill has stated above.

One of my customers insists on sourcing his own banner, which is shaped and has lugs and flaps all over to attach to various frames etc.

I have used banner vinyl for years so no probs, but recently (as he has had printed images of food elsewhere) he has been requesting printed images of food on these banners. I have until now said no. But according to Wm Smith it is possible. I haven’t actually done any yet but I am told it is an ok thing to do.

Full roll of digi and laminate not cheap though (if you aren’t doing much of this) so you’d better be doing a lot of them (or you could use the same media for all other apps).

    Cheers!
    Give them a call.

It wouldn’t necessarily need to be any high end expensive cast digital……..yes a cast would be softer and more conformable and possibly have a more aggressive adhesive but depending on the expected life time of the banner a polymeric calendered film could be more than sufficient to give the results needed.

wow!! So I can get away with using normal Vinyl on banner material?? so if thats the case whats so special about the banner vinyls, does it just last longer?? I’m hoping to get a good 3 years out of it and the banners quite large. 20foot x 5 foot. so will give it a try with 2-3 year vinyl.

below is what i am trying to do.

you do need to use banner vinyl if you want it to last.
it is about the same cost as a good calendared vinyl, and will only add a few pounds to the overall cost. A cheap 2-3 year vinyl will probably fail as it will not be able to flex with the banner.
Yes, you can use some "ordinary vinyls" but why take the risk when you can buy the correct material?
You will need a join in the large blue or white area, depending on what colour your banner is. If you havn’t flood coated a large are on a banner before there are a few tips and tricks to make it easier.

Standard gloss vinyls look horrid on a banner. Why not just use the right material? From what I have seen, short life vinyl does not perform well on banner material.

I’ve noticed banner vinyls are quite expensive like 4.50 for a meter of 760 in width unless i’m looking in the wrong places. Also I havn’t come across a supplier which sell a comprehensive range and it appears to be quite a nich thing unless i’m wrong.

Banner vinyls will only have about 20 colours, of which you will find that about 6 would produce most designs for a basic banner.

Also, as it is not such a high demand product the prices can’t be so competitive.
    It’s hardly a niche product.

It costs what it costs to do a job right, a cost which you will pass on.
If we could "get away with" using cheaper "alternative" products then why don’t we?
‘Cos they don’t work in the long run.
Try applying your logic with other vinyls; there is a massive range of different products, It’s the old rule of horses for courses.
Would you use a calendered when a cast is required just because the cast is dearer?
