advice needed please, paint peel?
just bought a van so removing the (90% reflective) films from the mpv come van,
done bonnet, glass and offside, so far so good, rear is different reflective to front and sides, gonna take some effort, near side slidey door gonna need a miracle!
i’d planned on driving this thing into the ground, i’d had it -a stop gap vehicle- for so long that i’d decided i’ll scrap it rather than sell it on but, it keeps passing mot’s and going with little spent on it! never thought i’d need to remove the signwriting so didn’t allow for easy removal,
it’s not like it’s worth loads to sell anyways, bit of a minger without lettering to draw the attention, to be fair!! at first i thought it was glue on the panel until i looked at the back of the film!
luckily it’s only one panel which looks like a poor quality respray, think i’ll leave it on that panel and incorporate some awful design!
but, oops…..

I hate that, best on your van rather than a client I guess.
I was employed by a bus company to remove election signage from a bus a few years ago.
I didn’t win the tender to apply the signs because I was too dear. I was paid to remove it though.
The other sign co had cut costs and used a very cheap material with hi tac permanent adhesive from china. (The tender stated it had to be fully removable)
I lifted one corner and realised it was not the right stuff, so called the fleet manager over and asked him to sign a release that I’d not be responsible if it pulled paint off.
He signed it willingly as he new it was supposed to be removable material.
He watched me remove it, and it took the paint off to bare metal. My gut dropped, his mouth dropped, and the original sign shop got a bill for a total respray of the bus.
The money they saved using a cheapo material was nothing to the cost they incurred repairing the damage.

I considered exactly that as i removed it!
further inspection has shown that at some point in it’s life, it’s had both rear qtrs repainted and one front door, presumably by monkeys!
what would have been a cheap £900 seller is now, if i’m lucky, a £500 seller! thankfully it’s legal for the next 8 6-8 months so that’s worth something!
i shoulda parked it on a roundabout for 6 months but instead i continued to pick…… I now can’t be bothered to waste any more time removing anything else, new owner can do it… plus the red is a pig to remove, i’ve already tried a corner, glue city and I’m not going anywhere near that car with thinners, it’s melt !

by the time i was 3/4 way round stripping it, i was laughing to myself, this only happens to me!

Thanks Hugh, I’ve been flat strap signing 44 buses mate. The contract was on hold during the GFC, but when they finally decided to go, it was all hands on deck. The bus depot is a round trip of 120klm every day and I averaged 1 bus a day. Clocked up nearly 5000 klms for that job alone.
Finished them about a fortnight ago, and been a bit off colour ever since. Worked stupid hours getting it finished in the allotted time, plus all my other work. I think I burnt the candle at both ends though. I actually had two other fleet contracts come in at the same time, so I signed something like 60 vehicles in 6 weeks. I’m 3M’s favourite customer at the moment.
With your reflective, next time you use 3M 680cr, Its totally remove-able within two years. I use nothing else. A bit dearer, but you save money and time when it comes to removing it.

sounds like you’ve been hard at it mate! hope the penny counting at the end of the month will have made it worthwhile though!
even regular vinyl pulled off paint, it wasn’t the viny;s fault, where the paint was good, it came off no problem, the cheaper oracle didn’t though!
