Hey guys, a few months back i bought my first printer, laminator set up. With that i also bought a 3m Javelin cutter bar. I thought id be able to attach this to a bench that i had made up, but.. it hasnt come with the bottom metal bit that the blade will slide into, instead it would be cutting into my MDF worktop. I had explained this to the person i bought it from, and he assured me it would be just what im after… Ive gone without for a while now and have started to get fed up of using a metre stick and scalpel.. Could anyone recommend where to look for one.. any good bad/experiences.. i think im gona have to buy a big bench for it also… any good value deals out there? 🙂 thanks in advance

build yourself a nice heavy duty wooden bench ben. get it bang on level and sheet the top with 1inch thick MDF and counter sink the holes. then sheet the top with the a single sheet of metal/glass, whatever you can that is in a single sheet as large as possible. i use a 1.3mm metal called Plasticol. but i use the reverse as one side has a pvc coating. it is an excellent work surface and the longer you use it, the better it gets. hard to explain but works for us and we have some of our worktops for about 8 years now.
you can see in this demo i have even used it on a table i built for sublimation printing, http://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=39060
albeit a much smaller table but comes in sheets of 10ft x 49inch off the shelf. it actually comes on a huge coil so if you can source it locally, just ask them to cut it to the length you require. by that i mean you could have a 15ft or more single sheet worktop. i have 10ft sheets as its ample for ority of prints we put out in a single peice.

sorry, not much help on the actual cutting tool… :lol1:

    Hi Ben

Keencut sell ‘The Big Bench’ to mount their cutter bars on. This allows you to raise and lower the cutter bar with handles at each end and the actual cut is onto a base plate with a cutting groove rather than onto a sacrificial surface, or I understand you can buy the actual lifting mechanism and the cutting base plate on their own to fit to your own bench.

    Cheers

Sorry didnt read your post correctly – you know about the big bench already, but as I say you can buy the parts to fit to your own bench

    Hi Ben,

It is possible to get the baseplate separately to the Big Bench if necessary but you will want to check that it fits your setup properly first.

Another option could be to source some 2mm UHMW Polyethylene, which can be bought from a number of plastics suppliers in very large sheets. The plastic stands up well as a cutting mat and is soft enough to prevent the blades from dulling prematurely. It is also an excellent surface for using the textile cutter if you plan on trimming any fabrics or photo paper with your Javelin.

    I hope this is useful.

    quote Robert Lambie:

I tried a google search but had no luck. Please could you let us know a supplier?

Also – is the metal steel? If so you could use magnets to secure any jobs to the bench rather than the usual masking tape.
