    Hi All

    Bit of a rant, sorry

I have just lost one of my staff, she has left after 6 years due to very personal reasons and i am very sad to see her leave.

any way, I am snowed under with work and the cracks are starting to show! i get home at night (or should that be morning 😕 ) and i am a worn out wreck, physically and mentally, time to hire more staff! never had to recruit before all the time up til now have been people i know from the trade, this time i have had to contact the job centre.
they are very helpful, but get this you can not under there computer system advertise for a sign maker!!!!!!!

Is it just me or do others find that very odd? i class my job to be a sign maker, but if you type sign maker into there web site no jobs come up, it offers you to search metal workers or signwriters. (there is no jobs advertised for signwriters in the whole of the country, i wonder why?) in my mind a sign writer is something very different to a sign maker, and a somewhat outdated view of our trade.

anyone else had problems like this recruiting?

not when recruiting but certainly when getting insurance, placing adverts etc.

"no, i’m not a sign writer, i’m a sign maker. No, not a poster printer, or screen printer, No, not a nameplate maker or erector..ffs"

Paul, I think it is more widespread than you think. We have something called business gateway up here and they don’t have a clue either. Yes they understand that a Sign writer is a trade, but if you tell them you are a Sign maker they haven’t got a clue what your talking about.

Not sure about yourself but to me a Sign Writer is a professional who uses traditional type materials like paint and brushes, it’s a skill that I don’t poses so I don’t call myself a Sign Writer.

yes your right Hugh, also had the same problem as you!

its just dawned on me, maybe this is why some find it hard to make good money,
we are not doing a real job!!! 😮

    I’m with you Martin,

I asked a friends dad -a brushie- many years ago if he’d take me on as his apprentice.. "no money in it now boy, everyone wants that sticky vinyl and there’s too many doing that too!

I don’t paint and I don’t use brushes, therefore I am not a sign writer, I do however make signs, therefore consider myself a sign maker!

    Paul,
perhaps you’re right, I best change my ads to signwriting!

Ask them to walk outside the "job Centre and point to the sign, which would have been made by a (fill in blank),or ask who made that ? serious case of computer says no
