Installing a large banner
Posted by Stuart Green on 13 July 2010 at 12:37I have a banner to install 6ft x 32 ft to be on a flat wall.
I would like to know if the best way to do this would be with a ladder or a scaffold. alsocan you just raw plug and screw through the eyelets with a washer (as i have done in the past) or would that be too difficult with a large banner. I know these days there are loads of fixings available for banners so just wondering what the best way to go about it.
thanx in advance
stu 🙂

i guess a lot would depend of whether it’s being hung portrait or landscape, how high from the ground, etc.
I tend to use ladders for most things, trestles / scaffold boards when I have too, and if i reeeeally have too, then i get scaffold tower or proper scaffold up.

unless you install the banner in separate sections, you are going to struggle with anything other than a cherry picker. ladders are a no go… i think you will find using them for this sort of thing would break H&S regulations. (sorry hugh)
scaffold tower is fine, but will make the fitting difficult and long winded. you may also damage the banner as a result. by that i mean…
unless you build a scaffold tower the FULL width of the banner. i.e. 32ft
you will need to fit, lets say the first 10ft then move the scaffold along and then fit the next 10ft and so on.
handling 32ft of banner 6ft deep coiled up "whilst fitting" is not easy due to its weight…
when you fit the first section then leave the rest "hanging" you can actually kink/stretch the banner and if your not careful tear the eyelet out of the banner due to its hanging weight on that single eyelet.
if you have a scaffold tower built, it has to be close to the wall/building, so pulling up and dropping down the excess banner material whilst fixing can also result in scratched/damage to the printed face of the banner.
if it where me, ide use a rough terrain cherry picker with an articulated boom
to do the fitting. yes, you could do it with a platform scissor lift cherry picker bbut if this is going high, ide body swerve it unless using a LARGE scissor lift because the smaller ones tend to wave about like a fly swat when more than 3/4 extened.
you will need two guys in the cherry picker… one to hold the coiled banner and the other to do the fixing and operate the cherry picker. -

you’re probably right Rob, (certainly so in this instance.
I Had a local signmaker -who i recently introduced myself too- tell me off cos he saw me put up a facia sign on ladders:-? the job in question would have had to close the footpath with scaffolding, nowhere to route the path because of railings and a main junction so went with ladders… I do have access to free towers but, they’re rarely beneficial to use unless it’s a big 6m lightbox or something.
i’ll catch up on the H&S regs.
i’ve always thought is ridiculous that a scaffold tower is considered safer than a pair of secured ladders. I know far more people who’ve fallen from scaffold than ladders!
out of interest, why do window cleaners not have to use scaffold or pickers?

When I worked on the Heathrow T5 build the H&S manager said you can use a ladder for jobs less then 15min. in total, so if your hanging 10 signs takes 10min each you cant use a ladder because of the time it takes to do the total job.

Rob prob uses these

yes, it’s unfortunate that commercial vehicle manufacturers still don’t allow the amount of forward seat adjustment that Rob requires 😕

guys, im not a H&S officer so please do not think all i say is gospel on this…
a while back i went for my IPAF license to be able to operate "all types" of cherry picker. whilst there they briefly covered various instances, do’s & dont’s with "working at height" which in recent years has been altered to include all injuries incurred whilst working over "i think" 6 inches OFF the ground!
the use of ladders is a working platform is allowed, but "again from memory" you must have 3 points of contact with the ladder at all times. "2 feet and 1 hand"… so i guess this is where window cleaners and the like get by on this. however, can you imagine trying to climb a ladder holding 32ft of banner, a cordless screw driver, fixings and more and then begin fitting?
Luke, no disrespect mate, but surely that guys talking nonsense mate.
i cannot see how anything like working at height should be waved as safe based on a time window. I mean, how long does it take an accident to happen?
i can see the logic if you are working from a low step ladder with its own platform to hold things, but not a high lean-to extending ladder and the like. -
easy guys… i only need those for getting a pint at the bar. 😉 :lol1:

THANKS FOR ALL YOU REPLIES!!! 🙂
As it turns out the banner will be quite easy to install as it is just more or less ground level. I’m thinking of just using screws and washers in to a wooden gate where they want it thanks all!!
