carbon fibre on an unpainted bonnet
Posted by Cheryl Smith on 24 May 2010 at 08:51been asked to wrap an unpainted bonnet. My guess it would need to be at least primed to stop rust…would that be sufficient for the carbon fibre to adhere to?..anyone who would be able to elaborate on this …i would love to have youar advice??
many thanks

NO……… 😮
It’ll more than likely in primer but that’s only to protect it before it gets painted.
Don’t do it, it’s gonna rust.

i am guessing you mean the underside of the bonnet may rust Neil, as the Wrap is going to seal/encapsulate the top with wrap vinyl?
I have actually seen a video 3M Di-nok Carbon Fibre used on bare metal body parts for a motorcycle. I obviously do not know how it performed long term or if the inside areas of the bike rusted, which ide expect it to have, unless they also wrapped the hidden areas. 😀

okay…so ill say to him it needs to be painted or it is likely to rust on the underside at least.?

Hi Cheryl
What material is the bonnet made of?
Every ones saying it will rust but is it aluminum?
Yes the vinyl will be ok on top but it will not protect the underside, unless of course it’s the above or plastic!

That of course is a question worth asking thanks…I am trying to get a bit clued up before I speak with him about his options….

Hi Cheryl
All new parts come with a protective black coating of primer on them. that needs to be keyed before painting. so will not rust + is on the underside of the car and wont be exposed to the elements as much as the front. the only thing is ever time the customer/someone else lifts the bonnet with see it is not a original bonnet and mite devalue the car!

The protective black coating that comes on new body panels is for protecting the panel whilst in storage/stock, Any good bodyshop will tell you the black protective coating should be fully removed before painting!!

Steven Ive been a car painter for over 15 years in a family business that has been going for over 30 years! That black coating is as hard as paint if not harder! we key the panel done (240/320) because the finish is not satisfactory for painting. then put on i etching primer on top then paint the panel. we would wax oil the under side of a new bonnet after painting it. but that can still been done with out painting it. plus depending on the model of the car some have a sound pad clipped on the underside as well offering more protection.

Cheryl.
Few weeks back I’ve done roof which has a lot of dents and owner decided to put a lot of filler on it. Overall effect is good but I’ve noticed after full day in sun when roof is going hot you can see few bubbles in the places where filler is. When it’s going colder they are disappearing. I wouldn’t be worry about any rust on unpainted bonnet.

you would surely worry about rust etc. if you wanted the customer to continue to be a customer, and not bad mouth you, if you have given all the options to the customer and that is what he has chosen, then I suppose it’s up to them but I would not be happy doing that, jmho

It is good to give them all angles of which might happen…then they have an informed choice.
thank you everyone
