  • Cutting down media?

Posted by Jason Pavlou on 15 May 2010 at 22:52

Hi all, anyone know how to cut down rolls of media. As there are some medias I’d like to buy but they don’t come in the width required for my machine, the company that supplies the media can only cut down 3 inch core rolls not 2 inch, and the media they sell for inkjet machines all comes on 2 inch rolls.

    Thanks

A crude way and not ideal, but it has got me through some scrapes. Is to use an electric mitre saw – make sure you put a ring of masking tape around where you want to cut and when you’re finished take the media outside and blow off any loose bits of dust etc.

    Cheers Andy,
Thanks for the prompt reply, I assume a fine toothed blade would be best aswell.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Chris,

The core size is not an issue at my end, as I can use 2inch or 3inch on my machine. The printer is a Canon iPF6100. The issue is my supplier has all the medias that I need, but they only come on 2inch cores, he can only cut down to size 3inch cores.

    Kind Regards

We use an aluminium blade when we do this, as I say its not ideal and I wouldnt suggest its a long term solution.

What is the drawback of cutting media this way?

Very messy mainly, the edges can be a little frayed too. Maybe have a try on a roll thats near the end of its life first to see how you can get on. Major drawback would be contaminates (dust from cutting) on the print media. If you’ve got an air compressor you could maybe give the cut roll a good blast to make sure you get as much off as possible.

Can you not just ask your supplier to cut to size for you?

    Cheers

    Hi Gary,

Unfortunately not, as they are unable to cut down media which is on a 2inch core, 3inch is not problem for them.

Sorry Jason I didn’t read the original question properly. Think I must still have my beer goggles on (<(

I have a 900 roll of reflective which is too wide for my cutter, yet i need to use it frequently.

i tend to roll off what i need onto another core, mask along the cut end, measure where i want it cut and tape around, mark a line around and then use a jigsaw with a fairly fine toothed blade in it, works fine for up to about 5m of material (this is fairly thick stuff),

when done i spool it back onto another core, i do this because the blade can get hot and it tends to slightly melt or rag the edge, by spooling it onto another you’re eliminating any stuck together bits.

sound long winded but takes about 5 mins. yes a bit messy, i tend to have the hoover handy if i’m likely to be using staticy sticky stuff in the vicinity anytime soon!
