Double sided magnetics?
Posted by John Dorling on 5 May 2010 at 11:18I am looking for a way of producing a ‘reversible’ magnetic sign with graphics on both sides. Anyone come across such a product or have any ideas?
Many thanks
John

Hi John, I do this all the time.
I buy fridge magnet in rolls 610mm wide. I put double sided tape on the no magnetic side, and stick another sheet of mag, with the mag side out, onto the ds tape.
Works a treat.

Hi Shane, Am I missing something here, how do you show the graphics, or did you mean tape the mag sides?

I put the graphics on the magnetic side, and stick the non magnetic sides together…
You have to coat the magnetic side with a colour, or if you are printing, it will be on a white background anyway…

surely anything on the magnetic side is going to affect the effectiveness of the material, wouldn’t have thought this was a good idea for anything moving like a vehicle so I am assuming you do this for exhibition type stuff Shane.

Shane that is the only method I had thought of that would work, but for this job I need to put 2 layers of vinyl on both sides, one of which will be reflective so I am thinking Martin is right – with that amount of vinyl on there I doubt it will stick. But I’ll give it a go and see how I get on…
Only other problem with that is that my customer may want lots of these and I need a way of finishing the edges as I don’t want them coming apart. They will be exposed to a lot of dust and dirt so it needs to be robust.
I have spoken to 3 different magnetics companies and they have all said ‘no way – can’t be done’. I want to prove them wrong, but I kind of need their help too!
Thanks
John

Interesting problem this one…..I don’t see how this will retain enough ‘magnetic stickability’ to work……looking forward to the ‘solution’ and good luck getting the big order as well as proving the mag companies wrong :thumbup2:

Well I have found a supplier of double sided magnetic sheeting… Now to see how well it sticks!

Hi Guys,
the fridge mag works well for internal. I’ve put two layers of cast on with no ill effects internally.
Use .9m japanese automotive mag for a stronger grip or for external use.
I use a solvent based ds adhesive so moisture shouldn’t be an issue, 3M edge sealer should fix that though, to be sure.
I’ve used reflective in this configuration too, the secret is to use high grade materials that are thinnest – I use 3M usually as it is usually very thin and they have a grade 1 polyester version here which is great.
Hope that helps guys

I think I am out on a limb here.
If it is magnetic then it will stick to steel. Now correct me if I am wrong, if the graphic is on the magnetic side then this side is stuck to the steel, now I know I don’t get out much but have they developed a see through steel plate that I have yet to get acquainted with (?) (?) (?) 😕Sorry if I sound a bit thick here. 🙄

why double sided?
just make two single sided, I cannot see an advantage of making them back to back, it does not save on material, and no advantage in storing or using.
Or perhaps I am missing something to?Peter

peter,
mine are made of the safety services here.
One side is red with the message or emergency, the other side is green when the emergency is over.
Having two separate mags meant one was always being misplaced, or needed to be stored. This way the mag is always onsite.
