  • How to paint an awning?

Posted by Simon Polakof on 27 April 2010 at 17:06

I have a customer asking me if we can do a couple of his awnings.
But I don’t have any idea how to go about it. I have found a supplier for the paint but does any one out there have any recommendations how to go about it?
I was thinking of using vinyl with some hard applying glue in a negative format so that we can paint the letters, but I don’t know if the vinyl will withstand the
    chemicals in the paint.

Simon what are these awnings made out of?
I have painted canvas ones in the past, not my most favorite thing to do but it can be done.
    Love…..Jill

It’s a thick fabric that is treated with a water repellent.

    Hmmm.
The water repellent may be problematic.
I usually paint awnings (Only done a few) with lettering enamel.
First coat is the color of the awning, as on a canvas one it always bleeds thru to the backing. Second coat would be the desired color.
I have also used latex paint with less than stellar results.

I have heard of people who use silk screen ink for awnings.
Also there is some sort of vinyl (and I can’t remember the name!!!!)
It’s like a fabric type of thing used for t-shirts.
The person who described this stuff used it as a mask, then painted with silk screen ink.
Sorry I couldn’t have been of more help.

I was thinking of doing the later one.
Thanks any way, hopefully some else has more experience.

I would look for a banner paint or screen printing ink, I have sign writen with screen printing ink, you need to thin it down alot other wise you dont get any flow.
