Contour cutting static cling material (urgent)
Posted by John Dorling on 15 March 2010 at 12:02Hi All
Has anyone tried print and cut of static cling window film? I have got to do an urgent quote for some circles on white which will be stuck to the inside of windows. Have not used it before so I don’t have any here I can try it on.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
John

At a previous workplace I worked at we did a lot of this for car showrooms. We pinted in reverse on jvc-3 and cut on sumo.

Did a load of sunstrips last year John and just cut as normal 😀

I’ve printed on this using my Cadet. I find you can print directly onto white and contour cut. The prints can then be stuck onto the inside of glass so that the printed side is in contact with the glass. It appears to stick just the same as it would if you were applying the reverse side onto glass.
The only problems I have experienced is a tendency for the some of the prints to smear in places during printing. Not sure why this happens?

Phill – have you tried removing any of the prints at a later date after they have been stuck on for a while?
I produced some static cling decals on my versacamm, printed and cut with the print applied to the glass. I did a couple of testers, stuck them on my own window and they worked fine. In total I supplied about 400 to a magazine company to go in newsagents windows.
About 2 weeks later I noticed I had left one of the testers on the window – I went to peel it off and it left the print on the window 😮 It cleaned off ok with IPA but it may be something to bare in mind. So far I haven’t had any comebacks from the stickers I supplied.
You also have to be very careful not to let the printed sides touch each other, even when dry as they stick to each other and will pull off part of the print also.

Hi Guys
Can you tell what manufacturer and supplier that you used for the materials as i seem to remember a few month back that there were problems with some makes that were getting used not being up to the job for printing with versacamm etc ?Cheers

Hmmmmm. Thanks for the replies. Looks like I may have opened a can of worms here! I have quoted my customer now but they have not specified which side they wish to display (i.e print side in or out to face of glass). I have based my quote on the white cling from APS, although they weren’t sure if it could be cut! Hadn’t thought of ink transfer to the glass though so I’d best mention that before I seal the deal!
Thanks
John

hi John,
i have never managed to get static cling to print properly on the versacamm with white cling! And printed reverse the print does come off on the window! After many attempts and many different medias i have been told that white static cling is not suitable for digital print machines! Sorry to burst the bubble but proceed with caution!regards

I had some over-large mock Tax-discs made, printed in reverse on white vinyl, stuck onto larger clear cling.
Although there is only a 12 mm or so rim of cling they still stay on.Lorraine
