Market over crowded?
Posted by Ewan Evans on 2 March 2010 at 22:44Hello every one hope you are well. Not been on this site in a while but have been toying with the idea of getting into vinyl wrapping, not so much printed vinyl but solid colours and carbon fibre etc. Do you think there’s much room left in the market?

As with anything, it up to you to make room if you think you can do it better and cheaper than others,
it is, and always will be a limited market. the novelty will only last a short period in my opinion,
How do you propose to market colour change wraps, and get people to come to you rather than the more established wrapping companies?Peter

I have had lots of customers asking me to wrap their cars in white vinyl and apply carbon fibre to roofs and stuff, as I do not currently know how to wrap I have been sending work to another company in Glasgow. I am going to Newcastle to help wrap a car on friday and hopefully gain some valuable knowledge and experience.

I get lots of customers asking for wraps, problem is when I tell them the price they usually change their minds!
Are you subbing the work out and taking a mark up, or just sending your customers elswhere?Peter

Just sending the work out as I have heard good things about the company but have never been in contact with any of the staff. I have told people about the prices and they seem happy, I have a few people apparently waiting for me to do their cars but will just need to see if they will put their money where their mouth is.

I don’t seem any harm in trying to grab a market share. You already have all the tools and equipment necessary. Maybe you need a heat gun but assuming you’ve removed vinyl graphics before so you probably got this.
It’s not like your trying to do printed wraps where you need a printer and a laminator which is a big investment.
We’re finding fleet companies down here are liking the colour change approach. They can purchase cars in the colour that has the highest resale value and also protect the paint work on the vehicles.
Wrapping a brand new car and stripping it three years later will leave the paint in pristine condition in terms of uv fading etc.

Ewan.
I dont mean this in a condescending way, but why would people be waiting for you to wrap their cars if you haven’t a clue how to do it?
If I were you, I would try and do a deal with the company that you are recommending, even if for only a small percentage.
Meanwhile, get yourself on a proper wrapping course, so you will at least be able to start to get an insight on what its all aboutPeter

Some consist of friends others are regular customers who have said that as they use me for tinting they would use me for other services that may interest them. They obviously expect me to do some sort of training course and practice before I let myself loose on their cars. I am doing a one day course with a guy I know in Washington Tyne and Wear, his company are a pretty big outfit and he regularly wraps cars and vans.

Thanks for your reply.
I use a heat gun for shrinking and heating window film. I won’t be going for big companies at first, I will start with the odd bonnet and things like that then once I gain confidence and experience I will then aim bigger. I just don’t want to waste money on courses n stuff and not be able to get any work.
