  • Problems fixing sign to wall

Posted by Peter Cox on 21 January 2010 at 14:53

I have a sign to make and fit for a local customer and it needs to be 16′ x 2′ which is fine but the sign needs to be away from the wall by 8" because of several obstacles in the way. I was going to use composite ali mounted onto exterior ply to give rigidity and held off the wall by fabricated standoff brackets (metal plates 2" x 20" spaced apart 8" with 1" square section to give the necessary clearance) no problems but it is going to be difficult to fix the ply to the brackets when they are fixed to the wall due to lack of clearance.
Any solutions or different ideas please?

    Thanks in advance
    Peter

not sure what you mean peter, cant you just use c/s self dril through the the ply to the brackets?
I dont think I would bother wit the ply though, composite tray with 8" returns, at 2 foot depth woud be ridgid enough on its own job

I think it would be tricky to self tap into the bracket through the ply as it would be difficult to line up the holes though not impossible, perhaps this is my best option.
I toyed with the idea of making a tray with a large return on the bottom but the sign is going above two bay windows with lead flashing running up the brickwork so it would’nt sit flush. The customer wants the sign as deep as possible so its going to have to sit above the flashing and also a fascia above hence the brackets.

    peter
you can buy self tapping and drilling screws
so no need to align holes

Without seeing the job I might go for two horizontal ally rails on brackets which a tray could be easily mounted on.

Thanks Peter and Mike for your suggestions.
Peter I use those screws quite a lot but they have not got the balls to go through a reasonable gauge mild steel.
Mike your job looks great and it will be suitable for future jobs, but because the sign panel has to sit above and away from lead flashing and fascia. See your thread.

If you’re going to go the ply route, why not self tapper fix through the face of the ply into the bracket, then apply the ACM to the ply using gel tape and Sikaflex?
You can have the sign up nice and strong and have no visible fixings. The gel tape’s really only to hold the sign on to the ply while the Sika is drying.

    Should be pretty damn weatherproof.
