  • how to create text for cutting with a stroke added

Not sure if this will make sense but i need to cut some black text that will have a solid yellow area/shadow behind it. I can get near to this by adding a stroke but I cant make the stroke be seen as an outline.
any help or pointers gratefully received.

    Hi Steve,

If you select the text. – object – expand apperence.

    or

select the text. – object – path – outline stroke.

    hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Steve

right have managed to get close, but now where the stroke overlaps i need to merge the outlines as this path will cut.
so i want to be left with just the outline of the stroke.
have tried to remove the overlapping paths but just not getting anywhere.
think i need an illustrator course!

Edit think ive cracked it using pathfinder and merge off to the cutter now!

Looks like you got it as yes you need to convert to outlines, expand appearance and then merge.

Just check that once you have merged you check that there are no double lines, these happen on all the inside strokes of letters like "qopad" etc, the holes in the middle of these letters will have 2 lines and you need to delete one otherwise the cutter will cut it twice.

This is something in Illustrator I have never been able to get around.

    There are 3 things you need to do, maybe 4 and they are;

    1) Practice
    2) Practice
    3) Practice

    and possibly a 4th which is ……….

    …….. PRACTICE 😛
