What is the best thing to do, to just do digital printing??

I have decided to give up the hard work and stop doing all the sign work and just do computer based work. I want to do digital printing based from home. maybe some small sign work here and there but would love to gain stability with my work and do mainly things like banners and labels which you can print and send out. What is the best way to gain stability in this kind of work. I can work from home or get a unit. If i advertise outside on a unit then i can get orders this way (constantly i hope), or print leaflets to promote my products like banners but then i have to hand them out all the time. what i am saying is how can i get constant work for doing things like labels e.t.c or large orders which you can then just print, print, print. I have a mate who is a printer who just concentrates on trade work for example, gets the design sent to him and then just prints it out. I would love this kinda work and have narrowed down to what i am good at which is design. So far i have stepped into the wrong direction as i have been doing signs and i think just doing digital print is more suited to me.

    would appreciate your help

    thanks

No one is going to serve up orders on a plate Stuart.

If it was that easy we would all be "just doing digital printing".

Sorry to use a 4 letter word on the forum but "work" is going to rear its ugly head whatever route you choose. 😉

More and more people are taking up sign work because it is so easy to make money.

    Urm…….NOT!

The only way to get established is hard work. Only people who work hard get "LUCKY" the rest of us just hang in there hoping that big one is just around the corner, trouble there is when you get around that corner you find that some "LUCKY" person got to it before you. Life sucks big time.
I have been in this game for 36 years and am still looking for the "EASY OPTION"

Wow, I too have decided to give up the hard work. It’s just not worth the hassle.

I’m going to be a window cleaner in Dubai, got a great contract.
I just clean a few windows in the sun every 8 weeks, BINGO, gonna earn millions……….yahay :yeeha: :yeeha:

Agree with the above comments – scaling down and just cherry picking the work you want to do is something you can only really do once you have become busy doing everything, it would be very hard to work up to being busy just concentrating on one area.

I’d guess most people who specialise in one area started off doing all sorts, then got more well known for their specialist area, and grew that part of the business.

One other thing, being self employed, your work is never that stable – OK, most of us probably have a core amount of work we can bank on getting that keeps us going, but apart from this it can be very variable.

From the sound of it, you want to scale down the amount of work you do and time spent doing it ? In this case, working from home is a good first step as you will drastically cut your overheads, which means you wont need as much work coming in to cover your basic costs.

Mike, I think Stuart already does work from home and I am pretty sure he is new to the industry so not really a case of scaling down but trying to change direction.

I would have to agree with all the comments above, if it were that easy then we would all be sitting at home just printing and sending out work mail order.
I doubt you have the gear to do trade printing because you would need a whole range of different printing and finishing machines to be able to supply the trade and it is unlikely that you would be able to do that from home.

I doubt you will get a lot of work from any sort of advertising on signs placed outside a unit, yes you may get a few people coming in but it won’t be enough to pay all the overheads and give you a decent wage. The fact that you only supply and people have to find someone else for fitting will also put some of those people off.
